Arizona Chickens

So for awhile now I've had the Jersey Giant boy and the Light Brahma boy in a pen of their own because I wasn't ready to breed them and they grew up together so they get along enough to be locked up together. Today a chick from another pen squeezed through the fencing into their pen, which happens at times. The Brahma started picking on it and the JG boy lunged at him and made his stop. Protecting the chick. This isn't the first time he's done it, either. I really like that he's such a sweetie and protective of any chicks that sneak into their pen.
So tonight I just went ahead and moved the Brahma out and into a temp cage, and put 3 black naked neck girls into the pen with the JG. He's never had his own girls before so it'll be interesting to see tomorrow how it goes. He's so big, and their so small! I really hope he's as gentle as he seems... :p

Look's like you have just rewarded him for saving the chick from the other roo!

Such a sweet story, let us know how it goes

I'm gonna put up a short video of how Mr Roo taught a lesson to Marshmellow Man yesterday I was surprised pretty sure Clucky told him to protect the ee's bc she was doing it before...lol

Betcha igorsMistress might take 'em... <3

Well, if @igorsMistress or anyone else might be interested in some of mine later, I am sure that they will let me know. As of right now, the 3 White NN/Breese mixed pullets haven't even started laying eggs yet.

Meanwhile, the 6 chicks that I hatched out from my Splash Australorp girl and the Cream Legbar roo match are 3 weeks old now. They all look sort of a dark bluish in color and look to have bars. A couple of them appear to be starting to grow the crests.

Anyone else having mite or lice issues? I'm going out to spray at this lovely hour

The only thing I was having problems with were ants in the run carrying off bit of the feed. I discovered them when they bit me. I took care of them. There has also been an increase in fly's, since I started using the mister's again.

I've had flies too since I'm making mud puddles. I got those hanging traps you add water to. Man they stink! But they work pretty well.

I sprayed the girls and coop with Permethrin just a few minutes ago, but have a little more to do after sunrise. I need to get out there to sweep the patio and rake the yard. Maybe Sunday.

As for chicks, I am curious to see your results, but I have 9 chickens and don't think my yard could handle more. I need to get back down to 6 eventually.

My birds had lice for awhile. But early Spring I cleaned out the coops and sprinkled Sevin dust everywhere, in all the cracks, nest boxes, and roosting places, then covered with new wood shavings. I know alot of people don't like Sevin, but it's always worked for me and I have yet to have any problems from it. The lice are gone, I haven't seen a single one since I did that. I make soda bottle fly traps for flies, which is only partially successful. But I figure there's not too much I can do about them. Our neighbor behind us has horses and cows too, so they're just gonna be a way of life.
