I had a Black Australorp younger hen before that layed one of her eggs in the water pan. I guess some of them do it wherever they are at if it feels good?

That's what I was thinking they were warm from the day and decided to have a water birth
Either that or they were helping themselves relax to pop it out

Oh no! This happened to me twice now from our local feed store, so I have been getting my feed from Ace hardware. One location sells the same brand of dog food and chicken feed as the feed store, so I've been taking my business there lately. I'll try the feed store again some day but it's so frustrating to open a 50 lb bag and find bugs inside.

Oooh, good to know. I have an Ace really close to me - do they all sell chicken feed, or just some of them? I went to the Country Feed Store. I called them and they said they could either refund me, or open bags with me to find one sans bugs.

When I find questionable eggs, I never throw them away,,,,,, I boil them up and feed them back to the chickens.
I know you are overrun with eggs though.

Well I'm not one to feed my chickens eggs, besides I was worried about any bacteria after spending the day in the murk mud it did feel bad to throw away eggs but I'd rather that than chance it

Don't you live sort of close to @DesertChic ? Maybe she could use your broody to hatch out some of her NN's?

Is your broody a Blue, Double-laced Blue, or Double-laced? The eggs from that breed that I seen online look to be darker brown than the one's that I have here from my flock.

Cavemanrich, There's a number of different places you can get Bresse from, most of them simply have their own flocked that they started with birds from Greenfire, and they sell them alot cheaper. This guy in Florida has a good repuatation.

I only have my 3 pure White Breese pullets, and I kept one of the pure cockerels for them. I got them as hatching eggs through @cactusrota Mine aren't laying eggs yet. @cactusrota sells and ships hatching eggs for them.

I actually processed my breeding roosters and am raising new cockerels right now, so won't have any available until next Spring. So I put that blue splash NN rooster, the one I had offered to you before the leakage showed up, in with my Bresse hens for some crosses. I'm hoping to set those eggs next week.

@cactusrota Didn't you say that the 3 Breese pullets that I hatched on April 5th from your hatching eggs should start laying in September? Should I start looking for some little pullet eggs?

So, you are closer to me? Maybe we could trade hens and that way you would still have a hen that will lay eggs for you. I would be willing to trade my rare colored Splash Australorp hen. She hasn't shown any sign of thinking about being broody, and no one has wanted her for breeding. She's been having her first adult molting and her new feather's are coming in.

Thank you for the offer I noticed today she has been out in the run more, so maybe she decided against going broody again. I will keep an eye on her over the next week and see what happens. I appreciate your offer and know those splash australorps are gorgeous birds.

@Michelle Guynn you can have some of my eggs! I get a dozen or more a day so I have a hundred from just this week


@SonoranChick I bet your hen would miss her family of hens but I know that clucking Rambita does that every time she comes out for a break its like shes counting to herself





My mud puddle got murky I drained it and took out the 2 inches of dirt that needs to dry out so their puddle will be clean again as I drained it last night I found 2 green eggs! I'm sure they were from that day but I still threw them away bc the water was so murkyfrom the mud I couldn't see them

I do worry that she would miss her chicken family. I know chickens become very invested in their own flock and have carefully crafted pecking orders. But I also know it's possible to rehome and introduce new hens to existing flocks successfully. I'm going to see if she's as stubborn as she seems...she's been out in the run a bit today but still wildly clucking (and yes it totally sounds like counting! Like she's counting out loud "this is how many seconds I've been off the nest...must get back to the nest!")
