The girl's are easy to re-home, but most people do not want the boy's. Keep on hatching, because those boy's will make good tasting mutt chicken and dumpling's once you get over run with them.

, yeah, they will be going into the freezer more than likely, I've given a friend a roo I had from the first hatch, he wanted new blood, doubtful he's going to be wanting 5 or 6 more, I do know that they'd end up in his freezer if he ended up with them.. It's probably a good thing that I've recently came into a chest freezer..lol. I do know several families that as long as they are not freaking over the fact it's not from a store, that could use free protein to help with the food budget. Food is the whole reason behind having them.

Yes, that is true. But just because you now have a chest freezer that you think you will have enough room for all of those boy's, be careful of your hubby using up your space for lot's of ice cream like mine does.

Process them one at a time for dinner as needed. Fresh is always better than frozen.
This poultry store near my house sells fresh poultry. Peeps pay a pretty high dollar for fresh. They could get processed from regular grocery chain for less.

But if you have way too many rooster's on hand, then doing them one at a time could mean that you have to eat chicken for every dinner time. Yes, I could build another pen, and I intend to do so. But I want to put more hen's and 1 rooster into it, not a bunch of roo's that are waiting to be my dinner.

Hi all,

It's windy and cold out there, sun and clouds and no rain since the other day.

I found another local to buy some quail eggs from around the beginning of March. I'm thinking about it. So far I'm only getting one egg a day and that's slightly irritating. I do have a quail stew I'm ready to try though. Just need a few more in the freezer first.

@starri33 I totally understand your feelings about having to do the deed. My chickens would be hard for me to kill, at least the curent flock members. I hope moving your newbies goes well. Plucking them off the roost really is the easiest form of capture!

He fills it up with ice cream, i hope he leaves a little corner for himself, we've got to get some of the weight off of him..lol. Personally I hate chest freezers, I am 5' 2" and if something is in the bottom of it, I practically have to crawl in. I got it for free, so couldn't be picky..lol..

@cavemanrich , I don't know that I could do one each time I needed one for dinner..

@igorsMistress Buster's leg is an off and on thing depending on how he decide's to act from day to day when he is outside in his yard. Tuesday is garbage truck day, and he has to try to chase it. Then the snowbird's are here practicing the rodeo roping, so those trailer's pass by, and he has to try to chase them too. He can't get out of his fenced yard to get them, so he can't catch them. Sometime he turn's the wrong way when he's doing that, and re-messes it up again. Got to get him another beef leg bone because his birthday is this month on the 24th.

@starri33 I know what you mean by practically having to crawl in to get something in the bottom. I'm short too. I used to be 5'2", but shrunk a bit as I got older.

@BlueBaby , if I shrink more I'm in trouble..lol.. I will have to climb in the thing. Only thing I need shrinking are my thigh's. lol. I've gotten ahold of the handyman I have on speed dial, his schedule is open, told him I need this coop finished by Sunday at the latest, so that I can plan on getting the new birds next week. My current hatch goes on lockdown tomorrow.. so will have more to add here in the next few weeks. We'll see how things go, I know that here in the desert we can use every drop of rain we can get, but I am hoping it holds off for a week or two.. let me get all this settled in. Work on the inside of the coop can be done, rain or not.

Nothing like falling in on your head in the chest freezer, huh? If you won't be hatching egg's again until for the Easter run, those would have to be set for the end of March.

I have been hatching for others recently. going to give a them each a couple of the new girls, so that will stop my "need" to hatch, lol.. hubby and I are taking off 28th, 29th of May and won't be back till the 4th or 5th of June. I don't want to have my house/pet sitter having to deal with chicks. I can always let her know a couple of days before we get home to put some of the eggs in a carton on the table lol
