Arizona Chickens

Well I am back on team bantam cochin for my Minnie Mouse (and her two new friends). I found some really good pics of the side, front, and top views of a 2 week bantam cochin, and it's right on the money. I have no qualms about extra fluffy mini chickens! Also, I am seeing more developed combs on other 2 week olds that end up roosters... I'll wait another week before I feel more confident about the sex. I just love that she runs to my hand now, I really don't want to give her up. I also realize I get way too bonded to pets to go through this process 🤣 I might need to adopt older chickens that need rehoming in the future.

Just make sure that you aren't getting someone's spent hen's, because you won't get any egg's.

@starri33 You have 5 broody hen's over there now?
Grr! I've had a few types of chickens, but this is a first. One of my andalusians is spending way too much time in the nest box. She was even there last night when the others had gone to roost. I took out the fake eggs, tomorrow I'll try taking out much of the bedding from the boxes. I know it's cooler these past few days, but don't trust my setup enough to set up a crate in the pen, heat-wise.--maybe with an ice bottle in it? They're 9 months, laying since february, just the four andalusian girls and no rooster, so no possible up side to this. BTW she seems to still be laying, she goes out with the others in the morning to forage.

An ice bottle in the nesting box might not even work. I think it was 2 year's ago that a AZ. member that used to stop in here had a broody that she could not break. She even put some of those ice pack's in the nesting box, and the hen stayed there and tried to hatch those.

I was thinking about putting the ice bottle in the crate, putting that in the path of the fan/mister. It's an aircraft-style crate, not a wire crate. It's just that I have a very new setup, with shade cloth but no decent trees yet. I even bought a portable swamp cooler to tide me over the next few years until my new trees grow. She's not panting at all in the nest box generally. When anyone is panting in there, I can rotate the mister/fan easily to cool it off. I haven't gotten to re-designing the nest box to open it up for the warmer climate down here.

** updated**
The nest box is a large tupperware tote with lid and divider to make two nests. I took the lid off because this is the first day she didn't go out with the others on her own. Made an awful sound and ran into the run in a panic, I hearded her towards the others. last I saw she was making a dust bath. Just the egg she laid yesterday. I took out some of the bedding from the box, there were some feathers... I'm going to good will to look for a wire crate.

As big as some of my egg's get, I just can't see me eating any nickle sized egg's.
I keep my new layer eggs, some of them are small, maybe considered extra small, as they build up, I'll use them for omelets..lol, like a dozen for a 3 egg omelet.. fairy eggs/fart eggs are set side for craft projects for people. Bucket Jr. is starting to lay good sized eggs, I'd say probably a couple of more months before I can add her eggs into the "for sale" cartons.

if she's still laying, I believe she's not broody, but you could always buy her some hatching eggs..lol, find someone local with a breed you want. I bought silkie eggs, only got two of them to hatch, but I blame that on myself, my incubator wasn't doing right
