Arizona Chickens

I'm hoping some of those people who bought chcikens and no longer want them will advertize them for sale near here.

And on a sad note, somebody's chicken who tried to cross the road did not get to the other side. From the feathering, it might have been a barred rock or ?. It's been lying about a half mile down the road for a few days now. :(

Glad to hear that the bantam chickies have a nice new home!

Check the feed and pet stores... some of them resell adult birds, but everyone is getting new shipments now that the weather has cooled.

What area are you in? Someone just posted on Craigslist for Gilbert.. https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/grd/d/gilbert-8-12-week-old-pullets-for-sale/7193471685.html

Thanks, but that would be too long of a drive. There are a few people selling chickens around here, but most of them are breeds that wouldn't be a good match. Someone has Delawares and New Hampshires, but I'm interested in eggs, not meat. Another one has Egyptian Fayoumis, but I've read that they don't take confinement very well. Maybe I'm being too picky, but holding out for a good match sounds best. My fingers are crossed for finding something at the show in Saint Johns.

Is anyone else thinking of going to that show? It would be fun to meet someone from the forum.

The Delaware's lay 280 large brown egg's a year. They are supposed to have a calm temperment.

The New Hamphire's also lay 280 large brown egg's a year, and this breed can be aggressive.

LOL! OK, it wouldn't hurt to call. I went back and found the posting, and those chickens were first advertised on August 28th, so they may or may not still be available.

I'm trying to stop myself from rushing in and getting the first ones I see, and then going to the show and wishing I'd waited. Light Sussex are also pretty, and lay pink eggs. That would be great. BCM lay chocolate colored eggs that are supposed to be really creamy, also great. And a broody hen would be a plus, because there wouldn't be a need for the incubator. Heat tolerant is definitely a plus.

I'd like to put some hardware fabric around the bottom of the small coop before putting any chickens inside. There are a lot of predators out here. Not a predator, but yesterday morning when I wanted to go to church I heard banging coming from the van. I opened the hood, and there was a rabbit inside! I yelled at it, and it only went in deeper, so I went to start the van to scare it away and it took off like, well, a scared rabbit. Hope it didn't chew anything. :bun

You need to find an alternate place to hide those carrots..
Scared rabbit :old :idunno I think if it wasn't Sunday, you would have used a different term.

I like your approach to getting what you want. WHY RUSH THINGS.:thumbsup

I know when I was thinking of getting new chicks the feed stores kept saying they were sold out in a couple of hours - this was in March (at beginning of lockdowns and right before it was almost too hot to ship to AZ in my thinking). So I reluctantly ordered them by mail - more than I really needed, and I ended up with 18 survivors out of 27. I chalked it up to shipping stress and I thought I wasn't a good chick mama. Then I got 9 more chicks and another 13 more (both from @Parront - who is the BEST chick mama and more).

As I collected chick raising supplies I met people at feed stores - some thought the chicks wouldn't lay for 2 years - I corrected them --but also pointed out when they should not buy chicks that looked like they had pasty butt for 3 days and they were still in the pen almost dead. So I am both surprised and not surprised to see the glut of overpriced teenage chickens for sale right now.
