Arizona Chickens

I wouldn't free-range any of my flock if I was you. That hawk is hungry. Some bird's have been hunted or flew to warmer places. Some smaller animals headed for hibernation from this colder weather, so there's not as plentiful food available now like there was. I think that the hawk's will also be starting the breeding season soon?
Don't know about the breeding season, but I've heard probable-hawk noises, not seen any, up here in spring valley. I let my adults out for a bit in the morning. They stay very close to the pen, compost bin and shed, they don't venture out into the rest of the yard, then right back into their safe pen. They must have an idea something's out there. So they're locked up most of the time now.

Howdy fellow Arizonans! North of Tucson here... Looking forward to picking some brains in the near future as I get started on this chicken endeavor. I’ve decided on raising Black Australorps as they seem to be a great combination of weather tolerant, docile and dual purpose birds.
I am currently in the process of leveling out about a half acre of my land to prep for chickens and a nice veggie garden. Hope to have the main coop and run finished by late January. Looking into Ideal Poultry for my initial chicks to start. Any input would be appreciated. Hope to share more with ya’ll soon.

Mine only range in the family room. I don't even leave my dogs out unattended. They're too heavy to fly off with, but i had a neighbor once whose HUSKY was still grabbed by an owl. But it was definitely aggressive and didn't care at all that i was nearby. Someone's cat is out, i know it's a house cat that escaped. It was in my yard yesterday, so i hope they get it back asap. (Its too timid so i can't approach it to get it).

Why would they care if you were there? There's stories about people who were standing outside near the chicken's that they had outside for free-ranging, and the hawk still came down to grab them. The smaller the chicken is the easier it is to grab them, I guess.

I guess i thought i was bigger so id be a deterrent! I cant let my little fluffies out. I have carried them one out at a time. Daisy ducks when any bird flies nearby and hides in my arms.

Australorps were great birds for me. Enjoy!

Glad you found our thread! I've heard good things about Ideal. I also had a very good experience with Privett Hatchery in New Mexico, a few years ago. Before all the postal excitement started I had several good experiences with Hoover's, but the distribution center nearest them is Minneapolis... Best of luck with your project. There are plenty of good coop designs here, I like the desert oasis by @igorsMistress.
