Arizona Chickens

It is best to have a flock that gets along! NNs and Dorkings are both very mild mannered easy breeds. Hatchery White Rocks probably have to be tough to survive at Ideal's breeding flock. I am looking forward to trying some Dorkings. They are supposed to be good! :drool

That first chick that hatched out this morning is already dried off and has been moved down into the brooder. It's a fully feathered neck, so even if it's a girl I won't be keeping that one. It look's red tinted in coloring, so it might have picked up the coloring from Louie's mom that was the RR/Dorking mix. I have to download the pictures of that chick to my pc so I'll be posting it here in a bit. One of the Dark-eyed hen's egg is hatching out now.

I will have shipped chicks from Sandhill pretty soon. Dorkings are on the list. And his White Rocks.

Ok here's my April Fool's Day chick that's also my first chick to hatch in 2021.

So cute!

Only one egg showed signs of life the other day, and that little one was pretty lively. If it turns out to be an only chick, are siblings necessary, and if so, could you give some tips on improving the odds of getting girl chicks from a feed store? Maybe wing shape or whatever? Hope your cute chick is a girl!

If it's a girl, I won't be keeping it from out of this batch. It doesn't have the Naked Neck.

What breed are you looking to possibly get at the feed store? I have had great luck using info online to sex the store chicks, i ended up overflowing with females!

If they still have chicks when the eggs are due to hatch (April 11th), I'd either be interested in white leghorns or copper marans. Cal Ranch had both. Don't know which hatchery they use. Some people were saying something about looking at the shape of the feathers, etc., to get a better idea if they are pullets or cockerels.

This afternoon/evening, someone is coming to take a look at the old chicken coop that's out in the field. It was standing there with the roof right side up next to it, then strong winds knocked over one wall last month. But the wood it's made of is nice and thick and it's pretty much all there, so I'm hoping to get him to set it back up closer to the house in a shady spot, if I can find one, and attach a run.

I think cal ranch still uses hoover's. when I got my pullets there last fall they had the hoover's boxes, and some of the breeds (such as my midnight majesty marans) were unique to hoover's
That sounds like a great plan for the coop!

After I woke up and had my first cup of coffee this morning, I discovered that 3 more chick's have hatched. One of them was dry enough, so I moved it down into the brooder with that other one that hatched yesterday. Those 2 are cuddled up next to each other now. The white chick isn't dry enough to move yet, and the forth one isn't done absorbing the egg yet. It look's like I'm getting all sort's of colors in this batch.
