Wow! That would be scary.

There was a 3' long snake (no rattles) near the chicken tractor. I poked it with a piece of tumbleweed and it left. The chickens are not in the tractor at the minute because of the high winds. Maybe it was looking for eggs? Maybe I should dig out one of those smelly eggs that didn't hatch and let it have one. It might get a bellyache that will make it want to stay away.

No reason to do mischief to something living that is not causing you danger, or harm. Snakes do keep rodent population in control.
Just do best you can to keep your chickens secure. :hugs

The Courier article was written for preschoolers by my standards, maybe they should add it to the list! right after songbirds and turtles...
This the second year in a row that there have been bear sightings in prescott valley, and since bear roam such a huge area I think anyone building or rebuilding should take that in consideration. I'm over 20 miles from the bear sighting (maybe less as the crow flies) and as it happens my pen is based on a chain link dog kennel staked in the ground at 8-10 points but with only a 2x4 no-climb horse fencing and some hardware cloth for a top. I have deer nearby but have never seen a bear. I do have a 6 ft block wall around the back yard though.

ETA: I think most black bear in AZ range from 75-150 lbs.

Not to also mention that wildlife (including bear's) loose their habitat when they have those bush and forest fires. Those that escape the fire's have to relocate themselves, even if that mean's moving into peoples back yard's. That's just nature.
