Arizona Chickens

WOW - I can't wait to see them - I hope they ALL hatch and grow well for you!
I had to go into town to pay some bill's, and while I was gone a 4th chick hatched. That last one is still in the incubator, but I moved the first 3 down into the brooder and got them started.

Some pics of new rooster coop in flex pen - also pic of how my DH made a slot for the bedding blocker board to make it easily removable when cleaning. Our standard is now to have a "threshold" like this on all doors to keep bedding in (and if it is a man door it also keeps litter inside of the run or barn). No comments on the color please - it was a mismixed exterior grade paint we got on markdown.

Also note the ventilation at top on all sides.

Smart thinking on the bedding blocker board! It's always a good thing to find a deal on paint, no matter what color that it happens to be.

How important is it for roosts to be at different heights as opposed to all on the same level? Does it matter to the chickens?

Sometimes it goes according to pecking order as per the one's that are on different level's. With that, the littler or younger one's get the bottom roost. If all of the flock are the same size and are able to get up there on the height of the roost's, then the bottom picture that you posted will be ok.

I agree with Bluebaby - comes mostly from pecking order. Some breeds need/like it lower though (maybe if they are heavy or don't fly well?). But all my Polish wanted to be up high (so they could see something past a big poofy hairdoo). I like the roosts to be all at same height even though my DH has some staggered in a certain enclosed run.

I really like the 2x4 on the flat side like your bottom pic. My DH hasn't heard me enough to make that a standard here. And he likes to use his joist hangers which hold the 2x4 in the most structurally strong way -upright.
