Arizona Chickens

What are scorpion deterrents?
Using stuff like peppermint oil and growing plants that keep scorpions away from coops c: as long as you don’t mind your chickens smelling like peppermint! Also these two! I look for as much natural things I can use around animals because I have pets and never want to harm them nor want to harm those I wish to deter ❤️

Oh, you are soooo not going to believe this!

Recently rodents have been hanging around after the chicken feed. I set several different types of traps, and this morning I caught one in a live catch trap. OK, so now what do I do with it? I look on line, and this web site suggests taking it to the vet, treating its wounds, and having the vet spay or neuter it before releasing it. What sane person would do this? I don't know about you, but if I asked my vet to do this, I'd probably hear some language you can't print here. Scroll down to the third part to see it. they also suggest taking it to the humane society. Not. Even. https://readytodiy.com/what-is-the-easiest-way-to-kill-a-trapped-rat-0051/
You can always release it a few miles away from your place! They will remain there as long as they have a natural food source

Has anyone raised Mille de fleurs in the Phoenix metro area?

How do they do with the heat?

I have a mister/fan setup. I also have a large bamboo grove that really drops the temps.

It’s as good as a “not quite hell” setup you can ask for in Mesa, AZ, but it’s still AZ.

Will these guys be ok? I did see a couple listed for sale on Craigslist earlier this year, but never spoke with the owners…

??

For scorpions, you or the chickens can remove their food source (crickets etc). One time I had a rodent chew an extension cord, so ever since I've been spraying with a mix of oils of mint, rosemary, cinnamon & oregano & cedar (not necessarily all oils in the same batch I mix), I haven't had any repeat incidents.

Maybe if someone has bantam's they can let you know. I have the bigger dual-purpose breed.

Welcome to BYC and to the Arizona thread! Omg I’m excited for you! I honestly hope you like the area and have fun with your new babies! Just remember that Tucson still has a ton of wildlife! Coyotes and a lot of other wildlife run through the city even though people try to play it off like they don’t tsk tsk!! Which means once you build your coop make sure it has a lid and predator deterrents and just to play it safe scorpion deterrents. While your babies are little you don’t want them playing other those nasty buggers.

If you go for feed store babies, look at their tags for information on the breed. Or I have a hatchery booklet that Cal Ranch gave me which has information on the poultry they sell and should have suggestions for heat and cold hardy birds :jumpy. I can look at it thoroughly and post pics to the thread for you or type it out! :thumbsup
Thank you so much!!

If you happen to have photos or the pamphlet handy, I would absolutely love any of the tips that they provide!

Well I think I got another "christmas present" today. The black chick (from Ideal 3/8/22) I thought was an australorp pullet looked right at me and she has ear muffs! Really has a single comb and white/pink soles of her black legs though. How precious!
