I've used the yellow strips that flies stick to successfully in the run. Tip: place them so you won't back into them. No fun getting your hair stuck to them!

Those flies come out thick like that after it rain's too. This morning the flies were gone!
Having accidentally left the misters running that other night is what drew them into all that moisture/damp ground. Lesson learned.
There's just the normal few strays hanging around fresh poos.
We are in Yuma County. We put a swamp cooler in our coop. It keeps the coop 10 degrees cooler than outdoor Temps. The chicks love it.Any AZ chicken people out there? I am looking for some advice on raising chicks in the desert. I'm in Mesa. Does it get too hot out here? I have four 20 day old chicks, 3 Buff Orps and 1 leghorn. Do we need to do anything special here
Welcome to the thread. The OP hasn’t been on BYC in quite some time but there are a few folks who check in here pretty regular. We are in Yuma County. We put a swamp cooler in our coop. It keeps the coop 10 degrees cooler than outdoor Temps. The chicks love it.
I have Easter Eggers. Supposedly they do well in the heat. They are about 2 months old now.Welcome to the thread. The OP hasn’t been on BYC in quite some time but there are a few folks who check in here pretty regular.
What kind of chicks do you have?
I’ve had some, they do as well as any other chicken really. I’ve learned that the fluffiest birds struggle the most here. Good luck with your flock!I have Easter Eggers. Supposedly they do well in the heat. They are about 2 months old now.
Ten minutes in this heat isn’t too bad. Try wetting the ground before taking them out, it’ll help them cool off. Also, if they’re in a separate room you can close the vent in that room or limit the amount of cool air if you can’t totally close it so that room is warmer than the rest of the house which may help them adjust. Also, you try again late evening, after being inside all day they might welcome the outdoor trip as long as they have shade. Gradually increase time based on how they’re doing.Put the 2 week olds outside in the run this morning for about 10 mins before they started panting & laying with their legs stretched out. It scared me bc I've never seen them lay out like that before. I brought them back inside right away. How will I ever get them used to the heat here? Scared it's going to kill them if I try to leave them out any longer...They have cold water & just huddle around it right b4 laying out like they are dying. -Unsure Helicopter chicken mom
