Arizona Chickens

Thing's are holding up OK over here I guess. I wish that the rain would come though. I hope the power doesn't go out on anyone. It would be very bad to not have any air-conditioning in this heat.

I stocked up on some ready to eat can goods for just in case of emergency. They are fully cooked and some can even be eaten out of the can, if the need arises. Or, they could be heated up outside on a grill or camp stove.
We had a 3 hour power out on Wednesday. Luckily it was evening (4:30-7:30) and I have a back up battery for the incubators. But even that late was pretty hot, and of course the power went out while I was cooking dinner 😂

Amen! I bought a generator and keep extra propane for the grill. I bought a stock of emergency food, too.
I finally decided to fix an old dog crate bottom for a huge chicken "pool". The lip is perfect for perching. I will put water and ice blocks in to keep it cool. The girls have all figured out that will keep them cool. I covered the run with one of those 80% shade tarps. The Home Depot water bucket gets a block of ice added, and frequent spraying the run keeps me busy.
My favorite is the small battery operated quiet fan behind a frozen milk jug. It really keeps the vicinity cool, and is hilarious watching the hens get their feathers blown.
What we do for fresh eggs and our feathered dogs!
"Our feathered dogs" ❤️🤣🤣🤣

Been thinking about my fellow AZ chicken keepers here and hoping everyone is coping with this heat.

I check on my flock a few times per day but they seem to be doing ok. A couple times I've found a hen or two sunbathing!
I check mine through out the day too. They're definitely feeling the heat but doing good. I only do deep shade and wading bowls for mine. I'm starting to feel like a mean momma when I read all that others do to cool their birds! But they stay healthy and enjoy a little sunbathing too ❤️

I'm not incubating right now, so at least I don't have that to worry about if our's goes out. My husband however, sleep's with one of those C-pap's, but he has a battery that he keep's charged up for just in case that he can hook his c-pap up to if it's needed for backup.

Try to stay cool, and I hope that everyone's electric stay's on. It's supposed to get even hotter.

* It's the sun spot's going crazy, not the global warming they want to blame everything on.

I do all of that from paranoia! With the approval of "lab grown" chicken, I wonder if we'll soon be regulated out of owning our own flock (or garden, for that matter).

I chose my breeds partially based on heat, and oddly the "excellent" rated leghorns seem most affected. I wonder if it's size, their temperaments, or being at the bottom of the pecking order.

Our shaded patio is reading 120F today!

I gave the chickens their first-ever electrolyte/vitamin water. (I tossed in some chia seeds to entice them to it.)

Today I also found part of an eggshell in the nestbox. They must've eaten one! I hope it was a one-off!!:(

Well, all of the nextdoor neighbors chickens, chicks, and duck's are on their way to a new home with @NuggetMama where they will be with someone that want's to take care of them.

The lady nextdoor has been lying to me about the goat though, and if she turns it loose out the back road like she mentioned to me, i will call animal control on her.

Wow, it's even hotter over there by you then it is over here at 114-F.

Maybe one got broken in the nestbox if hen's were fighting for the box.

If she lets poor Homer go, I am going to be so mad! We are almost home with the littles now! I can’t wait to get them out and settled down!

Thank you for taking them in, and I hope that it all goes well for you. Nothing like chicken and duck wrangling in the heat, huh? Tony cared about them, but now that he has passed on Pam want's nothing to do with any of them.

I hope that your daughter will be able to use those clothes that I sent back with you.
