Arizona Chickens

Larissa, it looks awesome!!! That is quite the paint color! You guys did a great job!

I bet the kids had a blast! Mine are always so excited to help, especially when it comes to paint. Today they "cleaned" my van with the water that was left in the bucket after my hubby washed his patrol car. Well, it at least motivated me to actually wash it. LOL! BTW, you feel left out? How about me? I'm not in the Phoenix area or Tuscon! Just in some weird little space in between.... HeHe...

I'm hoping to score big time down here. They are redoing one of the strip malls in Casa Grande and I called the site manager today. He is going to save me a bunch of scrap wood!!!!! For FREEEEEE!

I LOVE FREE!!! I'm hoping to get enough to make 3-4 little 4' x 4' coops for my little project chickens! Keep you fingers crossed for me!

Enjaytoo, I will take some pictures of my coop for you tomorrow and post them. I thought I had already, but no such luck... I still haven't added a shingled roof, but that is to come when I can get some shingles and tar paper for free! HeHe....

I know nothing about shipping crates, but your location caught my eye - I'm at 70th Ave, just south of Union Hills.

Wow that is close. That puts you in a neighborhood too or are there acres in there... I think that's still in Peoria. I have my little flock in a 25' back yard and I put that poor rooster in the garage each night...He only crows when the light is on or when in the yard but not much lately, maybe I am making him shy. I made pets out of these little ones got them when they were chicks and babied them all the way. I hand feed them and carry them around. They get more tame each day....Cant believe I got so attached. even thinking of chicks in the spring.

I'm just south of the Arrowhead HOA neighborhoods (they're on the north side of Union Hills & I'm on the south side) and east of Arrowhead mall. My neighborhood is mostly older, custom homes (mine was built in the 70s) with a few brand new ones in here too. Most lots in here are about 1/2 acre and we are all on septic. Thankfully, we are allowed chickens, since mine are too noisy to keep hidden, but we can't have roosters. That's neat that you found a way to keep your rooster quiet.

Thanks for the props! The color is necessary...it IS the Eggplant!

I also have some leftover green, black, and grey for trim and "flair". Just wait....it will be psycotropic.

I'll keep an eye out for roofing products for you.

Hey, you're cool - all us zonies are cool! I love your nestboxes! Even if they're weren't made from recycled materials they'd be perfect, but recycling makes them even more perfect. They're similar to mine, but you were able to get 4 boxes + storage - I only have 2 nesting areas in mine.

It wouldn't have been possible without copying your great ideas!

I also got a little cabinet (over the fridge, extra deep kind, the one you store XMAS liquor and phonebooks in) for $10, brand new. I am going to use it for the bantys.

That IS a great Eggplant color

I love it! Cant wait to see more pictures, I have got so many little ideas running through my head about this beautiful, sturdy-box-turns-chicken-hut....And I'll of course have to let my 3 year old "help" paint.......oh boy I can see it now

Hey all. Over the past few days my hens egg production has dropped considerably. They were powerhouses through the heat with consistent laying. Now they refuse to lay in their nest box and insist on laying out in the bushes outside the coop.

Any advice?

bonebrake... They could be molting. That puts the eggs on a slow production while they are using most of their energy in growing new feathers. As for the laying outside the nesting boxes. Just make sure that if they have found a favorite spot, block it! Also, put some dummy eggs in the nest box to encourage them to go where you want them to. Best of luck!

Larissa, you are too much! Poor birds!!!! You must run a tight ship over there!!!

My girls' production has decreased, also.

Judging by the collection of loose feathers in the pen, I got some molters. And some look pretty scruffy until their feathers come in.

For all of you with "illegal chickens"

EDITED:

Hey-- I just signed up for the BYC sister sites. I garden lotsandlots, and figured I would be doing some serious thread-hijacking here if I didn't go do the right thing and sign up there.

The easygarden seems a little sad and empty though: I couldn't find an officail AZ thread, so I started one. If you garden, come say hi!
