Arizona Chickens

What a cute little boy and beautiful horses!

I need to complete some sort of run as well. My garden is fenced off, but the fence is only 4' high. Once they realize the goodies it contains, they will be hopping the fence for sure! Just yesterday I went to pick some green beans, and the sneaky little chickens had cleaned off all the Chinese red noodle long beans that were hanging over the fence!

Ideally, I would like to exend the east side of the coop all the way to the back wall (about 80+ feet) as a "run". I would section off two smaller portions of it. One would be 10 by 10 and used as a "chicken garden" where I could plant munchies for the chickens, let it grow, and then let them destroy it. The second portion would be the "winter season" garden. That area gets full-sun, so I would use it for winter veggies, and then the chickes could have it all summer. (I would put up extra shade for summer)

I figure if I am going to go through the trouble of trenching and getting water to the far side of the yard, I should make the most of it. Comments?

EDITED for bean name.

Hey All!

I'm getting anxious waiting for my girls to start producing! They were born May 15th. I have a Delaware, a Jersey Giant, and 2 NH Reds. Is there anything special I should be doing or watching for in order to know when their time to produce has arrived! The anticipation is killing me!!! Thanks for your continued help and support.

PS - Is there anything special you professionals do in the fall/winter months for your birds? Just curious.

I think that if they start laying at 5 - 5 1/2 months, you are real lucky. . . . I would give them another month before starting to get anxious about it.

I can't say now, but as I recall, I used to have 10-15 hens at any one time and they pretty much produced 10-12+ eggs per day. That was year round. There were a few times it would drop below that, but that wasn't long, maybe a week or two?

I have all new chickens now. The oldest is a leghorn cross that produced all summer long. I had another leghorn that was also laying in june and July, but Leghorns being flighty (and able to fly!), she escaped, hopped the fence and the neighbor's dog sent her to that big henhouse in the sky.

Me too! Thankfully, it lasts a LONG time too. I'm still on the first bag (had it about 8 months and it's still more than 1/2 full.

You are very lucky. A 50lb bag last me two uses!!

Two uses!!! Wow! Well.. you do have a lot more pens than I do. I take a cup or so and sprinkle it around the two runs (about 160 sf) and the coop (about 35 sf) and place a little in the nestboxes every 3-4 weeks or so. We don't have any flies or smell, so it must be doing the job.
