I got some Buff Orps from Privettes, and two of them, at 2 months exactly, have combs like adult hens! naturally, this could be a problem. The other 3 have combs that are more like a racing stripe. Could it still be that these are hens that have a little too much machismo or are they really roos waiting to blossom?

Oh, they are a tad larger as well.

Sounds like 2 roosters & 3 hens. Check your chicks' wattles - orpington pullets will not have wattles at 2 months of age, so if yours do, you have roos.

These are 8 week old roos that I had to rehome (black australorp & buff orpington)

This is a 2 month old splash orpington pullet (small comb, no wattles):

IIagree with AZDesertChicks. See my blue orps, hatched at the same time. The one dark one is DEFINATELY a boy, and the little white one is still without combs and waddles. Unfortunately, the neighbor girl came and shook me down for chicks. So, I won't be able to show you any "progression" photos

WHOA WHOA WHOA... Are you sure you meant to say that boys will have 2 lengths? Because when I was picking my chicks, I was told that the GIRLS has 2 lenghts!! That would be a PERFECT(ly discouraging) explanation for why all the ones I was dead certain were going to be girls because of their feathers are BOYS!!!

If you all don't mind, here are some pics - tell me what you think...

Ameraucana/EE - honestly I'm not really sure how to tell the difference...

RIR - although I've been told that they can't possibly be RIR because they're not red enough - who knows...

I meant as an example---I really don't know much about feather-sexing, except that it ONLY works in a few breeds: namely those BRED to show diff length feathers. My understanding is that only production birds show this consistantly. I will look it up, to verify.

Looking at pics, you should also post them in the "breed/gender" thread, so yuo get more people looking at them.

EDITED: Here's the thread with the basic video-link.

"Wing sexing only works for certain breeds. It is not accurate at all in other breeds.

I don't believe RIR's are a breed that can be wing/feather sexed as day olds.

Hatcheries use three methods of sexing day olds - color sexing in sex-link chicks, wing/feather sexing for those breeds and vent sexing for the rest, where a specially trained worker peeks into the vent to see if the chick has male or female parts."

They all look like boys to me, especially the first 3, but

GAH!! That is a freaking depressing video!! What a rough first 6 hours of your life!!

Well-name them "Potpie" and "Parmesean" for now. Spoil them but stop snuggling them, and wait to see. If it crows, into the soup pot. If it lays an egg, it gets a new name and a belly scratch.

I am sorry, realism stinks.

Of my first 12 chicks, 8 were boys.

Maybe you two could get that Shawn guy up? Or we can all meet off Phoenix city property and do a BYC processing party?

Now THAT sounds depressing, and weird. Ya, weird and creepy.

Mahroni- HBuehler wants some BWAmericaunas. You should see if you can ship her all of those boys!

Edited for spelling.

Hi Mahonri, if you can not spare the 2 pullets at this time I can wait until you have a better hatch ratio. . . not a problem, just let me know what works for you. . .

Laree I love your idea! So who is going to contact him to find out what his rates are? My negotiating skills suck so I nominate someone else
