Arizona Chickens

Check out my hubby's Awesomeness:

I found an arcadia dog dog at a garage sale for $5, talked him down to $3. The DH installed in 10 minutes.

Here is the cocktail tree we put in the run. I will end up caging/netting it, since it already has tons of fruit. Notice the chickens enjoying the sun & fresh dirt.

ETA- I am off to secure the screen doors for shade.

OOOhh!! I also found a 6' by 8'peice of solar screen door shade at HD on clearance for $9. Also got some bird netting to put across the top of the run. I'll probably do that tomorrow.

Meh... everything depends on the price of steel. Sometimes it is up, sometimes it is WAAAY up.

Although I am SO proud of that dog door. It was one of those "ideas" where:
-I presented it,
-he said, "You can't do that",
-I say, "where's the drill?",
-and it magically gets done.

I did too! Do you think we'll get the same answer?

BAD NEWS & QUESTION:

Last night at 6pm, Sommer took a "mini-flock" over to her friend's Cal's house. It consisted of 7 hens and 3 roosters--all to be another "Aloha Project" flock. Sommer also gave 2 roos to her next door neighbor, and kept 4 or 5 from the same brooder pen for herself.

This morning, Cal called Sommer. When he went to feed them, all 10 chickens were dead. The pen was still latched, and no visable damage. No feathers, and they had access to clean water. Cal heard nothing.

Sommer's birds and the nieghbor's birds are fine.

What could have caused this? The cage Sommer transported them in was sanitized and rinsed. The pen was intact. There are no signs of tracks or struggle.

What do you think? Poison? Bad neighbors? A raccoon, cat, or other predator? I just sent Cal out to check the chicken's necks or signs of BBGuns.

Sometimes people put out rat poison or ant poison, and then years later after they are gone the poison is still there. They need to move the chicken coop to an other location and try again.

Sorry about the loss,

Rufus

I was up at 2 am this morning, too. Didn't get my notifications, though or would have joined you night owls. My cousin who is a PPD officer took DH up in the police chopper last night. He had a blast, but didn't get home til 1 am, so I was up

Makes for a lazy Saturday... have spent too much time this morning farming on my imaginary farm. Wish I could have gone yard sale-ing.

Laree, the dog door is inspiring! Does it have the locking door that slides into place? That would be cool...

I have the same problem, though we live outside of tucson. It seems like there isn't much around.

I am looking for some silkie eggs for my broody GLW.

Laree.... love the door.... so you think your hubby is a magician huh?

You've got him wrapped... and that's good.

Well, I'm getting ready to take a nap... I hope. This morning I had to run to the office to take care of an emergency... my brother is on vacation and so I'm seeing his patients while he's away. Kids cleaned the coop and the house. It was nice. Wedding this afternoon took FOREVER. It's a LONG story

DW splurged and bought me a large propane BBQ grill... really she's just sick of me broiling everything in the oven... now she can say, "take it outside and cook it!"

I grilled up some steaks, hot dogs and hamburgers and took #6 & #7 swimming. NICE.

At present, DS#1 & DS#3 are mowing and trimming the lawn at the office.

Only got 5 eggs today. Lazy butts! Maybe they were missing the barred rock or something.

DS#3 brought his girlfriend over and we were at the wedding 2 hours longer than we has supposed so we didn't get to spend any time with her. She is such a great gal... but he's a year younger and she's off to the university in the fall.

Well, I'll do my evening chores at some point in time before the sun goes down

Have a great Sabbath y'all.

M

Shaun,
How great! Every site I read says that males will fight furiously? Whatever! Exceptions exceptions.

Laree,
That is beyond awesome O possum.

Went looking at properties today....so great to see chickens running around in the front (irrigated) yards, just doing their chicken-thing... I totally am getting an Emu one day, saw one just hanging out with some horses, very cool..

Hope everyone is having a good weekend so far!

Pat from Ears, Wings, N Things posts on the Tucson Craigslist a lot... she has some pretty silkies (I'm not a good judge of chickens yet, but to my novice eyes they were nice and fluffy). She always has lots of fertile eggs and chicks. Her place is out in Avra Valley... I'm not sure which way you are outside of Tucson!

Here's one of her postings: http://tucson.craigslist.org/grd/1742902032.html
