I'm thinking the doves might have gotten too cold. I kept them in a bowl in the incubator. I tried to make them a nest. I kept the bator at 97 but thought it was too warm because it would reach 98.7 so I bumped it down to 95 and lost them right after that.


I found a home for 9 chickens today and for one of my sweetest hens. I was very happy I was able to part with 7 roosters! I still have about a dozen roosters left to find homes for, incase anyone wants any. I have a very nice gold polish rooster that's 17 weeks and a few blue (looks more like blue/splash) polish boys about 17 weeks also.

Thanks to Terrie and Nifty for resolving some of my problems.

My little AC unit isn't putting out like it used to, I'll probably need to get another.

I have a wheaten Ameraucana on 10 eggs. I'll candle them on the 13th and if they are rotten I'll just try and break her from her broodiness.

Someone on this forum once said that there is room for 1 rooster for every 10 hens, so that leaves 9 out of 10 roosters without a job.

Again, IMO, there are not enough "homes" for all the roosters. As much as I don't want to do it, I think it best to use them for their chicken purpose - food. I have fed them, now they can feed me. Right?

Laree - I am sooo sorry to hear about your URI outbreak. Ugh!! Do put a little raw ACV in their water. It really does help them fight infection of all kinds.

On misters- We have a $10 mister system from HD and we have it on a timer. The chooks love it!! If they are free ranging, they come running when it comes on.

A friend contacted me and said he found a tiny baby quail. Anyone want to give it a home? I think he is in Phoenix, but not sure. Let me know and I can put you in touch with him. He asked me to take it but I won't have room, what with my new Polish pullets coming this weekend!!

Tucson Tofu, I am pretty sure that when eggs get heated above 104 degrees for any length of time it pretty much dooms them. I guess we will find out. I have noticed when it is really hot, the broody hen gets off of the nest.

Mahonri, those little air conditioners are so cheap, I don't see how they can make them in China and ship them over here for that kind of money. To keep them running in good condition, you have to run them for about ten minutes every day or so during the winter so that the oil does not log in the condenser. It also makes sure the seals don't dry out. Let it set, and you lose it.

Do you keep your hens in the coop all summer? I let mine out as soon as it warms up.

I learn something new everyday.

Just went into the coop to shut the AC off and while it was slightly cooler in there than the 80 degrees outside, it wasn't that much cooler like when I bought it last year.

Mine are in the coop and run year round with the exception of the hour or so I let them into the yard before the sun goes down 2 or 3 times a week.

I do use ACV in the water, and we netted the entire run to prevent tweety birds from freeloading. No croakers yesterday. Dare I say they looked bett....no, I wont say it. No jinxes. *crosses fingers and toes*

Rufus- I think the cape honeysuckle is not poisonus. I used to feed it to my cockatiel, and we discussed it here too. Did you have different info? Because the last thing I need is sick and poisioned birds.

So I went to Lowe's yesterday and got a mister, an extra-long hose, and a timer.

My husband just called me to let me know that the shortest interval on the timer is 6 hours!! So i can't mist my chickens every 1 or 2 hours as I had planned! Blah!!

Gonna have to set it to go from 11-3 and then when I get home I'll manually run it for another hour or two. Geez!!

If my boss wasn't a [expletive deleted] I'd ask him to let me work from home in the summer

I think that honeysuckle is fine for them to eat. My bird will chow down on my honeysuckle vines and passionflower vines but they leave the jasmine vines alone.

We got our mister system last year from Walmart on clearance. Everyone might want to check that out also. Walmart starts clearancing things out way before the seasons are over.
