Arizona Chickens

Oh thank you, gold polish! I have to admit I didn't read anything much the breed before I got them. It was kind of an impulse buy, I just added them in with the other chicks.

The chick doesn't look like a blue andalusian chick... but LOL I take it you speak from experience.

I'll be happy if I don't end up with 2/3 roosters (which I've managed with every batch so far)!

No idea, but... potentially terrible means it could also be potentially delicious ;-)

I like stir frying asian veggies with soysauce, sesame oil, and crunchy peanut butter. Serve over rice noodles. Mmmm...

Is anyone with an unoccupied incubator interested in sharing some eggs with me? I will provide the eggs. Today is day 1 of collecting. If these girls keep laying at this rate, it could be upto 30 eggs or more. It would be 1 bantam breed, unless I get any eggs out of my silver laced Wyandotte pen or from my Ameruacana (ee) pen. Please PM me.

Thanks! I will watch Craigslist. Had not thought of it. Email or PM if you find a source! Tucson is not too far. Just drove to North Phoenix for feed... and to look at a Roo. As long as no rush hour it is tolerable.

I figured it would be too hot so I'd put half (more like 2/3rds) in my friend's incubator so they wouldn't be ruined.

I had put 4 under my hens, and 3 had started to develop. The polish mix, the wheaten that sort of hatched and died (my fault for messing with it), and then the egg that the hens let get cold.

The eggs that were in the incubator were the 4 Marans eggs and 4 of the Wheaten eggs. My friend tossed 2 of the eggs (1 maran and 1 wheaten) because she didn't think those were developing. Today one of those Wheaten eggs has a tiny pip started. So, there is still hope for those ones! They aren't really due until tomorrow, and with the cooler temp in the incubator (cooler than in the chicken house) they are more likely to hatch "on time" rather than days early.

But... only one chick for me out of all those eggs

The little polish mix hatched so early that by the time the incubator chicks hatch the momma hens might not accept new chicks.

Oh well, next time I have a broody maybe I can buy more eggs

I really want one of your wheatens!

In the meantime... I have chicks anyway!

I hope that didn't come across in a snotty way. Not my intentions. I'm a bit upset about chicks I got there not being the breed I bought. They were sexed as pullets and 8 of 11 blue chicks were roosters. I also got 2 "red" pullets and both were roosters, but absolutely beautiful I might add. Another occasion I got 9 marans next door and to put it kindly, I just sold a flock of 7 Andalusians (at 15 weeks old for less than I paid for them as day old chicks). The sexing on all was very inaccurate. But that wasn't what left the bad taste, the Andalusians did, but it has motivated me to learn to vent sex on my own. I got a book and I've been practicing on these chicks. I won't know how accurate I am for awhile but I do know that both male and females carry a "bump" in the vent and the bump does necessarily mean male. I cross compare with their wings. I'm eager to see how it all turns out.

Naked necks are interesting. I used to have hairless dogs and they remind me of those.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say that today was a great success! The house we saw that is closest to my husband's work, right in our range for a loan, and has the largest yard even had a very nice chicken coop already built in the back. It was amazing, with nest boxes and fans installed to keep the chickens cool. This is the place! So wish us luck as we try to get approved for our loan and get our offer accepted! Lots of love to you all and cannot wait to join you in being a chicken owner.

SchizoSkittles THAT'S AWESOME! I hope you get it, my fingers are crossed!

What are the odds you would find a house with a coop, and that the previous owners didn't do something silly like knock it down thinking it would increase property value?

Good luck!

NoSkiveez: You didn't come off as snotty at all! Just like you had gotten burned. Did we really get the chickens at the same place? It really sounds that way.

Good luck with your sexing skills!
