Arizona Chickens

Dr Burke at Cornerstone Animal Hospital (or is it Clinic?) FANTASTIC vet. Has chickens of his own. Will see just about any animal (he sees my chickens and rabbit as needed), but I would call to verify about the goats, just in case.

Clean and disinfect the area and you shouldn't have a problem with the chicks getting the pox, unless you are still having mosquito or other biting bug problems. You do not need a vet to vaccinate; can do that yourself.

Thanks for the response. I just now found it. I did find someone but am glad to know of your Dr. Burke. We do have mosquito's. heard we could control that with a mosquito light. What would you use to disinfect, I don't want to use some thing that will hurt the chickens. I am little green still on how to handle them.

You'll do better if you pay for a sale cage ($5) and put them in there, asking $3 or $4 a piece.

Unwanted roosters make great soups!!

You are more than welcome to make them into soup if you want

I can't do it..plus we have to get rid of them before they start crowing or we could get in trouble. Don't they crow before they are fully grown?

yup, mine started crowing i think last week and the batch he is from are just now 16 weeks old. it's a pathetic crow, but it has slowly started to gain some gusto, especially at 3:30am! so he will be sleeping in the garage tonight in a dog crate. i can't turn him in to soup either nor do i want to take him back to the feed store where he will sit in a cage until forever or someone straps razors to his spurs....so into the garage until i get the courage to simmer him. black astralorp roo anyone?

I wouldn't mind that at all! I had no idea how much I would like these little silkies until someone gave me a pair. Since our rooster is also, these would be the only pure breeds we could get. He's so little that I'm not sure he can get a big hen anyway. We don't have an incubator, so it would have to be the old fashioned way. If that happens, do I have to separate her?

Hello again, AZ. I have got to log in here more frequently (but then I get addicted). What a nice crowd!

Would someone please tell me where the Tucson Poultry show is? I'd love to go/join, and have been gearing up to get some new babies. Our hens are 2, and just not laying well. They are our first ladies, and we are attached to them, but it would be nice to get more than an occasional egg.

Thanks,
Anna

The show is at the Pima County Fairgrounds in Thurber Hall. Saturday is the best day to go, because all of the birds are there. Usually sale birds are brought in throughout the day, too.

I will be there all 3 days, too, helping out.
If anyone is looking for something to do this Sunday, 11/21/10 at noon, you are always welcome to help set up tables, cages, etc.

Sorry for changing the subject, but does anyone know of a feed store near Phoenix or Tucson with a wide selection of pigeon supplies? I'm getting nowhere on the 'net other than hours and location information. I did try asking the Arizona Pigeon Club, but I guess they're keeping it a secret :p

Thanks!!!

Bryan

I live in Queen Creek but drive to Tempe/Phoenix all the time so am more than willing to meet around there. I currently have two stewing chickens
