WAIT JUST A MINUTE! I didn't see the rule book when I signed up for this thing. Where does it say you have to have a roo AND and incubator? I have the roo and 2 broodies in the same month, isn't that good enough? I mean I drove over 90 miles to get eggs last week (thank you Mahalo!) to put under Mrs. Fluffy Puffy(who names these chickens? oh, 4 year old boy). I am beginning to feel like I joined some kind of chicken cult, like I need some of every kind. NO ONE WARNED ME last year when I started off with just 3 chicks and now I fear I will have 773 like Bob and I 'll have to live in the coop! So I say, thank goodness I don't have an incubator because that I can't hide as easily as I can hide fertile eggs under a broody hen from dh

I left my laptop at work over the weekend and I think that's left me at least 10 pages behind. You guys don't mess around! I will catch up someday.

Wondered about 16% vs 20% feed for layers... The 20% is labeled as "breeder" feed - will it harm or help regular layers in any way?


ETA: I'm actually NINETEEN pages behind!! You guys need hobbies!

BEES: I've thought about keeping bees - how much honey can one hive produce? The only place I would keep them is on the roof... my yard isn't big enough to have them on the ground - too close to kids. Oh by the way... I found out last week that I'm having a BOY! Didn't remember if I told you all or not.

DM: ANy chance you're going to be selling any of your Dellies? I've wanted one for 2 years but haven't found any locally.


This weekend I made a modification or sorts to the coop. I had this bamboo wall stuff that I put around the bottom 3 feet. The chickens are their loudest when they can see the grass, but can't get to it. I'm not sure whether this will actually help or not, but I think it makes it look nicer too because you can't see the poop and crates and stuff.

Wings pointed down and held out from her body, scratching and pecking at the ground that wasn't really directed at anything, all the while making crazy clucking sounds. nurseshelly, those tiny birds are just inherently funny and cute!

cluckin crazy, I like the bamboo along the bottom. I think it just might work--out of sight, out of mind seems especially true for chickens. Your grapevine is going to take off! Have you thought of ways you could get the vines to provide overhead cover for the run? Also, congratulations on the boy!

we checked the powerball ticket today

and we were so close
two more numbers and were going
to win the jackpot, the powerball was correct 27
and we got three of other number correct
one more number it was 10,000
or two more numbers the jackpot 123 0r 124 million dollars
if we could have gotten the jackpot we could
have enough for my dads kidney transplant
but we dont loose hope that one day
my father can have a kidney transplant

I set the rest of the eggs yesterday, so my incubator can race with your broody hen to hatching. I forget if I told you duck eggs are a little different (more protein) and get rubbery with high heat/low moisture. They make the best omlettes, though, with heavy beating and plenty of milk

This is as caught up as I can get with this thread. I am wiped out from my mother's visit already and there are five more days to go. It has been a lot of fun, really, but there has been a lot of:

"Oooh, wait, please don't throw those scraps in the trash, I'll give them to the worms. What? No, it really is not that unusual, they are very good composters and...What? Well, yes, I have two bins of worms. Yes, it is a lot of worms. Yes, I do occasionally have to touch them. No, it really is not that unusual...Oooh, wait, please, those scraps can go to the chickens... Umm, well, the bale of straw at the end of the porch is for the chickens, and they kind of broke into it and scattered a couple of flakes...Well, they were having so much fun with it...Why don't I just rake it up...Yes, I am also raising beetle grubs for the chickens. No, it really is not that unusual..."

Gallo - I had a great time meeting you and seeing your house and La Gallina Resort and Spa. What a garden! I did notice the kitchen, too. I'd love to come back to get the official tour. I am getting close to redoing mine. How do you have so much time?!

cluckin - That looks great. Let us know if it works, I need to do something for the days they can't be out.

pdx2phx - I agree. This group has many enablers, but it is so fun!

Nurseshelly - In that vein (of enabling), I don't think we should meet any time soon. I am struggling to keep myself from not buying an incubator and getting some eggs. No telling what would happen if we spoke in person. I'd have goats, a couple of horses again, and 200 chickens!
