Random thoughts today:

Lost a poult on Friday, gained 4 more today.

There were 4 (8-12 week?) old poults at the feed store, stuck in teeny cages. I couldn't tell the breeds of the two "heratige" poults, marked $14.99. (They sell the day-old heratige poults for $14.99). The other two poults were broad-breasted whites for $8.99 (they are also $8.99 at a day old). Long story short, I talked the manager down to $10, and got all four started poults for $38! There is AT LEAST 2 bags of feed already in these birds, so it was a swinging deal.

Poults are like used cars...they are taking up valuable lot space, but unlike used cars, they eat and poop. It is SO easy to bargain the people down on price

I also moved my 3-week-ol poults out to the Easter Chick pen. Since most of the Easter chicks are banties, they are now comparable size.... But the little poults were still freaked out, so when I went in there check up on them, this one wanted to be held. It sat and pooped on my shoulder for about a half hour.

It sat continuously, not pooped continuously. I am pretty sure it only pooped once.

Anywhoo, I'll have nip the snuggling in the bud. I don't think a 40-pound tom trying to roost on my shoulder is going to work, especially when he gets all hormonal and humpy.

OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH, send that boy over to move some rock so i can have a couple of those poults!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can you feel the earth moving at your house? i am jumping up and down. I WANT SOME TURKEYS GOSH **** **!!!!!!!!!!!! and no, i did not swear. i don't want to eat them, i just want to look at them

Once again, the AC in the coop has quit me. The blower quit working. Everyone is still alive.

DW wants the Easter chicks put in coops or pens ASAP. My Icelandics can fly over anything above 5 feet now.

WOW....gone for a month and you all post like crazy!

I think I am caught up...

Welcome to the new folks, sorry for the losses of those of you who have experienced them, and a big

for those who have hatched new fuzzy butts!

So long story short - we were gone for our wedding and honeymoon, and had a petsitter take care of our 16 (now 15) ladies while we were gone. We had one loss, our SS pullet (from heat I think)

We also came home to this quandry - our white frizzle is BALD. She is is now BEYOND CREEPY.... a walking, clucking plucked chicken. She doesn't have any down left, and what feathers she has are just the spines...none of the fan of the feather. She is actually pretty high on the pecking order, so I don't think her feathers are getting pulled out (or that she is doing it herself). Either way I haven't seen pecking/pulling going on.

Could this be a genetic problem? Is this just the worst molt ever?

I don't know what to do.....I don't want her to get more sunburned than she probably already is, and obviously she won't do well w/o feathers in the winter. I am a softie so don't want to cull her. She is still laying, eating and pooping all like normal.

We tried making an 'apron' with more coverage, but but my sewing abilities are, um, not good.

I also bought a newborn 'onesie' at goodwill, thinking I might be able to cut a hole in the butt for poopage, but haven't tried yet. Get that on her with maybe a section of sock for her neck???

Any ideas anyone?? I will also crosspost to one of the mystery ailments threads.......

been a long time coming....

As far as our bald frizzle, whose name is Snowflake (although I'm not sure that name is so fitting anymore!!) I am hoping it's just a bad molt.
