Oh maaaaaannn. So sorry you had such devastating help.

He figured it was his way of keeping them cool. Oh well, we live and learn.

Mahonri, sorry about the losses. It's been a tough season for your birds. I've been worrying about promoting coccidiosis with all the watering to cool things down, it hadn't occurred to me that it could also promote IB.

ca, congratulations!!

I had to look up your new breed and they are beautiful!

I couldn't help but think of Phyllis Diller, they ought to be good for endless laughs.

nurseshelly, cute! What an expression she has.

LareePQG and Pastrymama, nice chick triage/ER service. I'm sure the frozen stuff in the brooder would freak out most non-Arizonans!

BTW, it was much funnier as a frozen sausage than a banana.

mclevinson, good luck with your hatch!

azpenguin and southerndesert, congratulations on your new birds!

pimachickens, it was great to meet you too!

constance, I'm glad everything went so smoothly and hopefully no one was scarred for life. Let me know if you need help again--many hands make for light work--or something like that. I can certainly use the practice.

Mahonri,
I am so sorry for your losses! It must be the downtown climate. Hope you find a way to keep the rest alive!

I started giving the younger chickens supplements in the water (like gatorade). At these temps the chicken food looses vitamins by the minute.

Hello again everyone.

I ended up purchasing two 6 week old Speckled Sussex pullets from the feed store last Sunday. We were just so close when we were at church that I had to ask hubby if we could swing by and just see what they had. They had those, 4 week old Buff Orpingtons that I was seriously considering, and I think 6 week old white rocks (although the whiteboard on the front of the coop said barred rock..which they were most def. not). They've been outside all week and seem to be doing well since we started putting ice packs outside as well as wetting the ground in the early afternoon. I don't want to put up a misting system if possible because where I live water prices are horrendous. This summer will not end fast enough!

Here are some pictures of the new babies

I am curious what is IB? I have a mister in my run and I have hosed my fluffy butts down now and then. It is just awful to read about the losses this Summer. I did lose one but the other three seem stable enough now. Of course the temps have dropped out of the teens so I am sure that is helping.

So the other night when the dust storm hit I went outside to take picture of course. LOL...Now I read there could be serious cases of Valley Fever break out....duh what was I thinking? Can chickens get Vallley Fever too? I know dogs and cats can.
