So sorry to hear you've had a day from he!!.

Sounds like you've run up all your bad luck for quite a while. Go buy a lottery ticket - maybe it'll balance out!

Yep, I really do want to live in Tucson. I've been enamored with the area for years and I absolutely love the desert.

It's hot here too and you know what they say about a dry heat vs. a humid one. It's true too. I lived in FL for a couple years and east Texas for five years and couldn't stand the humidity in either location. Here in the midwest the weather has two extremes and little in-between. You can have it either hot and humid with lush crops of corn or cold and icy with empty fields of drifting snow. At least when it's hot in Tucson you can sit in your chair with a cold drink and have something nice to look at!
Anyhow, I look forward to getting to know all my new BYC neighbors and please keep me in mind with any local advice/tips, especially rentals. Hey, meant to ask, what's the attitude/ordinance about roosters? And do you think I'll have trouble finding a rental that will allow my birds? I'm only bringing about a dozen and they are bantams.

Too bad you want Tucson, we have a 3 bedroom (older type AZ house) that needs a little work and pampering where a person can have chickens, garden, and all that good stuff and next door to the elementary school. The house rents for 600.00 a month plus utilities....

Thing is ya gotta like old style rural AZ living with an evaporative cooler and that ain't for everyone

Meara, I'm sorry if I sounded like a Debbie Downer on Tucson, we're approaching the end (

115 degrees makes me delirious. The one good thing is you don't usually become completely saturated with sweat within 60 seconds of walking outside here. I don't miss that at all. I also don't miss the cold of the midwest. You can't have roosters within city limits in Tucson, but you can have something like 24 or 25 chickens. Also, your coop can't be any closer than 30' to your nearest neighbor's house. However, I see this rule violated all the time (especially downtown where lot sizes are smaller) and it doesn't seem to cause too many problems. Overall, I have to say that the city is very chicken friendly. I'm constantly surprised by how many people in my neighborhood have chickens and I live right in the center of town. I suspect that it might not be too difficult to find a rental that will fit your needs. There are a LOT of vacant houses in town right now. If you are able, you should take a week to come out and search for a place. I'll keep my eyes open. Oh, I'd also check craig's list and see what you can find there.

Mahonri, I'm glad your DS was O.K. Things like that can go the other direction in the blink of an eye. I love Verracruz! It's very different than a lot of the other cities in Mexico. Of course it's been a long time since I've been there (1987), but I suspect the best parts of places like that don't change too much. Hopefully they fixed the road going down from the plateau to the city. That was one of the most frightening drives I ever took.

Mikey D, when I put ice in the cooler, the colder water does somehow make it into the pvc part with the nipples. I think it has to do with the cool water sinking and hot rising. It's in complete shade too, so that helps. I would highly recommend plumbing in an automatic source for water if it's not too troublesome. It's one of those things that gives me peace of mind knowing that if one of the other waterers fails, they won't likely die of dehydration. The bucket waterers are so easy to make though and you can also insulate them and hook them up to an auto fill too.

I'm always mindful of the second post in this thread; it always stuck with me.

You definately need to familiarize yourself with the laws and zoning ordinances for Tucson. You may have to go outside of Tucson proper to be allowed birds.

I'm computing again. Just have to get used to new stuff and I feel all slow and awkward with it. And I am out of coffee, money and patience. But glad to have a new computer.
