I'm very visual so I appreciate the pics and sizes. I've always used a cardboard box and creatively added on as they grew but I think the tote is the way to go this time. I think I saw a little tutorial one time on making the lid for one. Off to find it.

Those totes look easy to clean.

Here is my stage 1 brooder:

I am so sad about the whole thing with Mahonri, reading his thread this morning I was in absolute tears

But I have 6 beautiful w/bw ameraucana pullets from his eggs, just wish I hadn't gotten a roo complaint too and would have been able to keep the ameraucana roo I hatched and the wheaten marans. Seems to be a re-occuring theme as of late. We tolerate barking dogs at midnight, but a roo crowing at 7am, just unacceptable.

My next door neighbor lets their dogs run in their front yard off the leash, but one of them charged at my aunt and her leashed dog a few weeks ago in my driveway. But I suppose that's different.

Now look what gem I found on ebay this morning for about 5 bucks:

MAGNETIC HATCHING EGG and CHICK SEXER
This has been proven to work on Day Old Chicks,Ducks,Quail,Canaries,Budgies and just about any type of poultry!
Suitable for:- Hatching eggs as well as day old chicks.
Even works on Humans

How does it work
The magnetic force causes it to swing one way for male and the other for females. It works in exactly the same way for hatching chicks.
If it does not respond then the egg is considered infertile.
An Instruction Leaflet is included with each unit.

Hatching your own eggs will never be quite the same again!
These have been around for a while now and if you hunt around you will find them in other placeS but usually cost more.
I was thinking the same as you do these work or is this a con. YES they really do work.
This has been 100% for me !!

NOT HATCHING YOURSELF
DON'T GET CAUGHT OUT AGAIN WITH THE OLD "THEY'RE TOO YOUNG TO TELL ROUTINE"
Even if you don't hatch eggs yourself and simply want to buy day old chicks just take it along and let it decide for you.
My magnetic egg sexer has kept me right through out this year!

Ok, silly Arizona peeps- I'm heading your way on Tuesday. I'll be there until the 22nd.

I just lost my Grampa and I'll be there helping my mom move Grama back out of the home in Phoenix back to their house in Sun City. I will likely not have a car, and would be delighted to have a lunch with anyone who might be in the area as a distraction while I'm there.

I will bring any fertile eggs I can, but right now that's likely limited to EEs and porcelain d'Uccles...everyone else is on strike or mixed with other breeds for easier maintenance while I'm gone.

I might have some Ponape/Nikkei or some of my project meat bird, too.

Would love to hear from you if you are near Sun City and have some time- email me!

Mahonri,
How are you doing? Please keep us posted about how it goes with the inspection

.

On another note: you could still participate in new years and easter hatches! Just bring your chickens to one of us for breeding and then take it back home and collect the eggs . It's done with other animals all the time

. Why not with chickens? How about all the roosters that hatch as the "stud" fee?
Or we can supply you with eggs during the holidays.
Don't let the boring people ruin your life! Keep hatching!

ChooksChick,
sorry to hear about your Grampa! A sad occasion to come and visit. Hope your Grama is going to be ok!

I'll be too busy to come to you but you are welcome to come and visit me. I am about 45 minutes west of Sun City (that is "close" for AZ conditions) on Fridays and weekends. I have PLENTY of distractions for you. Just PM or email.

Hey!!!

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THIS AD!!! This is just nutszoid.

Everyone knows that to tell the sex of chicks you have to hold the chickens by what would be the scruff of their neck and see if their legs dangle. Separate out the leg curlers, boys one and all. Then put the pullet chicks upside down (laying on their back) in the palm of your hand. If they struggle, put them with the other boys. Then take the remaining pullet chicks and (one at a time) put them in a brooder with two bowls of water. if they drink from the left one they are boys, pull 'em out.

This method is GUARANTEED to be effective on all pullets ordered from large hatcheries that sex their pullet chicks. Of course there is a small margin for error. Say +/-50%.

Do you need a lid? I was just going to leave it uncovered in the tub...
