So how do you tell if they are ripe if you don't know what color they are supposed to be?
Do they all get really red on the outside?

I don't have a water heater box for my stage 2 brooder yet. I might have to break down and buy one of those big totes. ($20 at Walmart)

Not all of my pomegranates are completely red on the outside (even when ripe). We had read that the test for ripeness was to tap on the fruit and hear a metallic sound. That didn't work all that well for us last year as we never quite heard that sound and by the time we checked, it was too late. The odd thing is, the one that is white inside is pretty tasty!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have already tried the long distance scraping and there is just no way. I explored the PVC piping w/flange idea because I liked the idea of capping for future access. The problem is I couldn't find pipe big enough for me to fit through! And I didn't know you could weld plastic! I mean, it makes sense, but I just never considered it. I think that may be the ticket for water-tightness. Plus, I will get to buy a new toy

. I will try very hard to remember to be on the outside of the tank before I seal it back up. Thank you, ca.

Oooh, ooh, I just thought of something! If there is any access at all, could you take a high pressure washer and stick the nozzle inside and spray it out?

I like my pomegranate tree becuase it and the fruit are pretty, but I do NOT like pomegranates. Mine sometimes turn red and sometimes do not. I'm wondering if light has anything to do with it. It's in a very shady part of the yard.

Pima - whatever you do please DO NOT CUT THE SIDE. You'll never get it to reseal. It is probably poly ethlyene and there is no easily obtainable glue for it. The best way to clean one of those is take it to a self serve car wash (or bring it to my school) and use a pressure washer through the fill hole in the bottom. It should be around 2-1/2" or so and you can get most of the bottom through there. If that'snot good enough try cutting a small (6" or so) hole in a flat section of the top. You can then stick the pressure washer nozzle in there and get the entire bottom cleaned out. Then using stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers, attach an access plate (read slightly larger piece of plastic) back over the hole.

Hope it helps and let me know if you need assistance!

I just read all the posts up till now. Gallo is right on the money. A PVC flange would serve to seal up the hole in the top and you could easily fill and cap it as well. + the pressure washer thing!
Great minds think alike!

I was not offended in any way by any P90X comment! It is hard and I hate it, but I am losing weight and getting some muscle definition so I am motivated to keep doing it.

I looked at it some more last night! Wow, it looks brutal and tough and would certainly build some muscle definition. I wish I had your motivation. Keep at it.

I know this should go in the illnesses thread, but since it is pretty unique to the desert I wanted to post here first and see what you all say -

3-4 of our hens found a bunch of scorpions this afternoon and according to DH ate with great relish. When I came home a few hours later I found 3 of them lethargic, semi-paralyzed and making air-gulping motions like they are having trouble breathing. DH researched and we now have them inside and gave them diluted children's benadryl per various website advice.

Does anyone have additional advice? Two are banties (EE and cochin) and 1 is a regular NH. Have people had their girls recover from this? At least the NH was stung, too. Our SLW also seems affected, but is walking around ok, just slowly, so we have left her outside (and not given benadryl) for the time being....

any advice/experience would be appreciated.....
