Next question - Tammy would like to know what the justification for "organic apple cider vinegar" she says she has a chemical background and the vinegar is just an acid, is there any reason it must be organic or will the regular stuff work as well?

I wondered the same thing. lol...

I was told the organic is un filtered, and that what's called the 'mother' is the stuff that settles to the bottom of the jar, a culture of sorts that is used to start another batch. That is what has all the goodies . The 'mother' and the un filtered is what is important.

I hope that helps. It's still something that i'm researching and learning my self. Many people use it daily too. Add it to juice and drink it. Or water with honey.

Apples are the top rated fruit with pesticides.

I buy organic for all of the Dirty Dozen. http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary/

Well, with Seramas, you can tell pretty well by 3 weeks, definitely by 4 weeks old. I would imagine with D'uccle chicks it would be similar. Bantams usually mature faster.

Hi nurseshelly!
Thanks! They are so cute! I just got done googleing them and they sound perfect for us!
It's a small yard and no boys allowed.. lol...

I've been wanting to ask how Elvis was doing and are you still able to keep him in the house?
Is he still a little sweetie?

I have serama eggs on the way as of Monday. We are wanting to try and keep one roo in the house.
Also,
My son has been wanting something of his own.. So we are going to figure something out for him, and I was thinking maybe let him pick a serama roo.

We also have parakeets, and other small birds in the house. But he'd want something he can handle and play with.

He use to have a very tame pigeon that he hatched and raised, and misses it..

We have quail, but they're a little flighty.

So.. I'm hoping to get away with a serama roo in the house. lol...

Elvis is still in the house from about 8pm to 10 or 11am. He is still really nice and sweet. He is a super good rooster too, always finding treats to give to the ladies, and he never eats them himself. My son mostly holds Elvis and Marilyn (Seramas), Flo (silkie) and Gertrude (BO).

Thanks Pastry! Roo it is with S&P!

I'm starting to suspect I have 2 roos of the 6.

One of the sex-links (believe it or not) and one of the PRs.
The sex link has all white feathers coming in on the body and only red in the wings and shoulders. The PR is getting tiny little red wattles but it was the first to feather.
Does anybody know at what age PRs cockerels combs redden? Mine are 4 weeks yesterday.

Oh, no Becky. That's horrible! The Ideal sexer guy must have been drinking that day. I'm so confused as to who's who now with the extra packing peanuts and I think Mikey and I got a little mixed up on ours, although, it now looks as though I actually have about 6 red broilers like I should and maybe 2 red production pullets? I'm not sure though. There's a lot of chicks moving around now that I added the younger ones and a lot of them are red. I'm just starting to be able to tell the cockerels from the pullets, not positive but sort of sure.

You need organic, with the 'mother' in it. I got Braggs brand at the health food store. New life.

Becky,
It's good to know it's helped yours. I'm going to start using it.

I am going to order Silkie, Serama , and D'uccle eggs this week! All will ship on Monday! Can't wait to have chicks!

Thanks Becky & Critter - ACV it will be!

Now to find a health food store...

Apache Junction health food stores anyone???

Mikey, Sprouts on Greenfield and Southern. Is that too far? Remember, the cheaper brand of organic ACV is about half the price, too. fleischmanns.

Good grief...those cornish are U-G-L-Y

haha...they'll be easy plucking I guess - since they're missing half their feathers

My thoughts exactly. If I ever decide to raise birds for meat I think I'll just get heritage breeds and wait longer.

Mikey, I got my Braggs ACV from Fry's in the organic section if closer?

Congrats on the coops, g-babies, babies, etc., love the pics!

We finally got our coop fixed so no more dog issues! The turkeys learned to hop on the block wall and tightrope-walk with a hotwire on the neighbor's side up high and their 2 dogs...got them down with bringing out food, I think they may have figured that out, but now they have bird netting across the thing now. I had to laugh last nite before he got the netting up, their little was out yelling "Mom I see a turkey on the fence."

I lucked out and hubby decided to extend another 16 or so feet

will get pics and Sunday hatched out some experimental eggs and had 3 of 3 fertilized Dominique-RIR mixes hatch, now more in the bator with today's egg added for another. Are they sex-linked?, if so I got 3 roos

Does not need to be organic, unless you plan to make your own vinegar, it doesn't need the mother. The primary reason that it helps prevent coccidiosis is that it makes the intestinal environment more acidic, and therefore less favorable. I'm honestly not certain that any kind of vinegar would not work equally well at this. However, the ACV does have vitamins and minerals that are missing in distilled white vinegar. In my experience, if you purchase at a big box store like Target or Walmart, the "ACV" tends to be flavoured, not actually made with apple cider. That purchased in grocery stores tends to be the real stuff. I am not a huge fan of organic. I don't MIND it, but I realize that natural things are not always good for people or animals, and synthetic ones are not necessarily bad. I am a big proponent of moderation and common sense.
