mrs_ed!
I am too sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you find a few friends for your baby soon!

Well,
We were lucky enough to find a baby close to ours in age Wed.
We got a 1 week old sex link to keep our single hatchling company. Could someone please explain a little about the sex link chickens.
I told the guy it had to be a hen, so it better be! From what I found with google, is a certian color at hatch will be a certian sex?

Here she is....

(The redish one)

My son will probably name here Fluffy! and I named the little black one that we hatched, Dandy.

Thank you Mahonri. I was a bit worried but...

It's kinda disgusting actually.

It' like a visible, external stomach.

I always thought the crop was some internal thing.

LOL!
Chickens aren't so bad. Now little parakeets and all sorts of birds have a naked crop for awhile. That looks bad!

Basically, all the food goes to the crop and is slowly digested to the stomach. That's part of why it gets so huge, the message takes awhile to get to the brain. Kinda of like people on Thanksgiving.

If that's a sex link it's most definitely a pullet. with red sex links, red=pullet and white=cockerel.

Here is more info on sex links:

Thank you!
I don't recall seeing white chicks. They had like 5 diff. breeds in one brooder.

It may have been RIL? and something...??
I could call them if it's important to know the breeds. I told him to point out the sex links and it had to be a hen, and she's the color he pointed out. lol...
