Arizona Chickens

Hello everyone! Somewhat of a newbie here. I'm from Eagar(about 50 miles from Show Low or 15 miles from NM border up in the White Mountains) I've had a rough start with my chickens. First flock of 13(11 EEs and 2 banties). Were supposedly pullets but I wound up with one banty hen and 12 roos. Neighbors weren't to happy with all the crowing so all the EE roos found their way to the table. Next spring hatched 7 BO pullets and was gifted with 3 leghorn pullets. Lost all of them(including the banties from the year before) due to the Wallow fire(came within a mile of my house). So I am now a proud momma of 8 EEs, 3 Black Australorps, 3 Silkies(one so far very quiet roo), and 3 frizzled bantams(one is in question if its a roo or hen). All around 23 weeks. Very impatiently waiting eggs. I think they are on strike thanks to this crazy weather we've had up here.

Welcome newbies!

Thanks for the great pics Mikey - I wish I could have gone on the tour. Maybe next year. Glad that you got to see everyone's gardens before the frost hits tonight.

I wish I could be worrying about 37 deg outside. Right now I'm sitting at 23 with an inch of snow.

Thank you for the warm welcomes, anyone here up near me?

Mikey-wonderful pics of the coop tour! They have really helped me out with my coop extention plans.

Hey AZ chickers!

Currently I'm reviewing my Aloha stock. I have a lot of hens right now, and a ton of roosters, too, but unfortunately, not enough breeder pens. I may be able to set somebody up with an adult Aloha rooster and a few hens for an instant "starter" flock.

Cost for the actual chickens would be minimal or free, but they'd need a safe home and the ability to keep this rooster with the hens. Would prefer someone with an incubator who may be interested in hatching out and keeping some offspring, maybe tossing a couple of other "big" hens in there to improve type. (Best breeds for improving type would be Speckled Sussex, NHR, RIR, Buff Orp and Buff Rock, btw.) This rooster would be a perfect candidate for crossing with these outside breeds of hens. (He's small, but very colorful.)

Below is a photo of the rooster that could be rehomed. One of the hens would be a "Confetti" girl of mine, she's really lovely. But I have five Confettis, I think, and the others have a better balance of color so if I have to cull one, she would be it. She's the hen with the head up in the group shot below:

If I rehome, the ideal time would be this month, as I'll be traveling a lot in January. That means the chickens won't get out for free-range time while I'm gone, and currently there are too many roosters in the one main coop. (Six, at the moment, all in the same run.) They are fine when I let them out, but there is a lot of chasing going on when the coop door is closed all day, LOL. So it looks like a couple of boys will need to find new homes . . . . and can maybe sweeten the deal with a hen or two for the right person.

PM me if interested, thanks! I will be hatching out lots of chicks this spring, but due to space restraints, I very rarely have adult stock available.

I have to set up the wine cooler bator. Will do tomorrow. Will start NOW. Will post Tour pictures when I can't sleep. Going to Zoning dept Monday to check something out...HOA said it's Gilbert keeping me from having chooks, gonna pursue their wrong-headedness until they have a permanent migraine.

You're kidding? They're blaming it on Gilbert? There are buffaloes on Lindsey about 5 miles south of my, right in the middle of town on a little bitty lot! Buffaloes for gosh sakes! I'm not brave enough to keep them and I used to buy wild longhorns right off the Wildlife refuge in OK, never touched by humans. Buffaloes are wild animals that leap 8 foot fences and try to gore people. And they say Gilbert is keeping you from having chickens?

Not done fighting yet.
