why no cracked corn?

Is this a general question, or are you asking it in reference to something someone said earlier? Cracked corn is fine for chickens. You wouldn't want it as the principle food source, but as part of, or in addition to, a formulated feed cracked corn would be just fine.

Gallo, I had to update my response!

......after ZERO interest in the outside world.....EVER, today of all days the 4 OEGBs that we've had since chickdom in November decided that it was a good day to go exploring. DH was working in the front yard (chickens are in the back yard behind block wall) and he looks up from what he's working on and sees the "peep gang" as we call it stroll on up to him, the 4 of them chattering excitedly the whole time. He had to chase them all around, and rather than running around the side yard to put them back, he just shoved them in the front door of the house as he caught them (oh yay).

The last one (Red Sonja) is really hard to catch. Luckily all of this is captured on our security cameras! He had the video cued up and ready for me when I walked in the door, so I could see what mayhem "my" chickens caused this afternoon.....

So now it looks like tomorrow morning I'm going to be trimming some flight feathers.....naughty girls. I'm just glad someone was home. We have a busy street in front of our house, and neighbors with crazy backyard dogs....etc......very lucky.

Oh my! That could have turned out bad; I'll bet that security cam footage is hilarious though!

So, they flew over the wall? Do you have an idea of which ones were the instigators (OEGBs or MGs)? I wonder if they were just interested in what the treat master was up to in the front yard or where they simply trying to expand their horizons? I'll be very curious about how this all works out for you. Keep us updated!

Thanks! I'll try it. I'm going to put it out with them this morning and see what they think of it. It opens really easily, so I don't know if I will need a weight or not.

We are just using a rock for a counter weight at this time, until the chicks can open it on their own

Had Goaties born this morning! One more mama due anytime. Had a scare today. The electricity went out in Wittmann! MY EGGS!! But was only out little over a hour. The eggs got down to the 80s. Hope all is well with them.

Fuzzybird The babies are too cute.



So, my laying hen made me mad (ok not really mad) for cheating me an egg yesterday. She was freeloading but today.....drum roll please.... she popped out two. I thought I was seeing double so had to put one in each hand to make sure there really were two eggs. We checked last night at 10 pm and nothing, checked at 7 am nothing, 11:30 am and nothing again. Left and got back home at 3pm 2 eggs side by side. I didn't know they could do that.

Pastrymama, not sure what kind of incubator you have, but it should have plugs on top, mine are red. If you need to up the humidity and can't open it, I snake some fish tank tubing in and use a syringe to get hot water in to up the humidity again. Another tool I have recently learned is keeping a knitting needle handy to put through the hole if I need to move eggs a little, like when chicks have played soccer with them and all nudged into one spot!

What helped me for the soccer match in the incubator is buying the rubber shelf liner from the dollar store and lining the whole bottom with it. I works really great and washes easy.

The Moderns are actually pretty cautious so far. They are really curious about us, let us pick them up, and take treats but don't really wander the full extent of the yard even. I am a-ok with that!

My 0.02 so far is that the Moderns may not be as good fliers as the duckwing OEGBs. Those OEGBs are pretty light weight with a lot of wing, while the moderns are pretty solidly muscled (despite being teensy and leggy) for their size, with smaller wings.....so they are surprisingly hefty....dare I say "Buff"

humidity stable in the 70ish range. bring on the quail! i have pips already.

in other news, i am beginning to think the fireman is right(don't any of you DARE tell him). he says, " chicks be crazy " but with more fireman type language. but i have found that this also applies to birds. example, my two broodies and their new hatchlings. one hen(blue wheaten am) the other(dark brahma) look totally different. these crazy chicks have spent the day organizing themselves by color to match their new mama. the buff colored ones, under the wheaten. the single black one, under the brahma. the poor pale blue almost lavender chick has been nest hopping not being able to find the right color mama. the yellow chick threw in the towel and stayed with the brahma. see what i mean? chicks be crazy and i have been up waaaayyyyyyy too long starring at that incubator and peakiing under hens that delirium has set iin and it's all gobbledegook. ooooohhhhhh, i get my wellie eggs this weekend
