Arizona Chickens

Hi Everyone; I'm new to BYC but have been lurking awhile. We are in Norman OK out by the lake and our baby chicks are now 1 1/2 weeks old. 2 EE's, 3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Light Brahmas and 2 Cuckoo Marans. They are doing great and lots of fun but I'm wondering when/if I should let them have greens and if so, what kind. I put chick grit in their brooder yesterday just in case they should begin eating greens. Any thoughts? My grandmother had close to 5000 chickens -- all free to move about and lay at will back in the early 70's and so I grew up with chicks. Now continuing the tradition on a much smaller scale.

my blue wheaten ameraucana didn't go broody(yet). however, i have a brahma in the box. wonderful broodies!!!!!!!!!! i have never been sucessful at breaking a broody, but all mine have been brahmas and cochins mostly. keep saving and let's see what happens with this brahma(mikey, that's one of the dark grey ones with the feathered feetsies). sometimes the broodies will eat an egg if it gets cracked. i had that happen with this last silkie hatch. and yes, i have crated a broody before with food and water and opened it up once a day to see if she wanted out, i never force them off the nest. if my brahma stays in the box for another few days, bring over what you have collected and we'll stick them under her friday or saturday. okie? and you can pick up the seed box too.

Thanks for the flash cards Pastry!

I done what ya done told me to do and put a packing peanut in with the quarantined peepers.

Hopefully he'll be OK in 2 weeks and I can take some of those Wellies off your hands.

Ummmm...just the HUGE guy I shook hands with? That guy has strep?

Terrific.

BTW the Fireman seems like a great guy & you and yours must come over for supper!

And yes - Bio-security freak almost come near a possible understated description.

Oh thank you, thank you! I only have the 3 eggs left and they're still under her. Do you want me to keep them under her? I have a feeling she has stopped laying, but the other one is laying. I have them together so broody is stealing the other's eggs. Either way, I'll pick up the seed box friday or sat.
