Ok, guys and gals, I need your expert advise. Is this little olive egger a roo? What do you all think? He/she is almost 13 weeks old, no crowing, but the saddle feathers have me questioning. Thank you in advance!

Everything on her looks Girlie....except those saddle feathers. No hackles though??

By 13 weeks cockerels usually have bright red combs. What color is her comb?? From the pic I am guessing a tiny peacomb?? I think Pullet. There is a thread called sexing Easter Eggers. If you post a pic here you will find some expert advise. link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...nd-tricks-pictures-included/1250#post_9278097

Yes, even in the desert it drops below 90 at night. It doesn't need to be anything fancy....just a warm spot in the brooder. In my younger (and stupider) days I brooded chicks in a cardboard box with a desk lamp for warmth. Just lucky I didn't burn my house down. Google the brinsea ecoglow chick brooder...not to buy, just to check out. It is kind of like an electric hen. Just an elevated platform with a heating element. The chicks run all over the brooder and duck under the platform to warm up. I love mine...but it was a bit pricey. One of these days I am going to try and duplicate it with some left over welded wire fencing and a heating pad. Heating pads seem pretty safe, and it would be easy to sandwich one between some wire and fashion something for 3 inch feet. If you get creative, you can probably build something with stuff you have around the house.

If you put day old chicks out in a coop without some sort of brooder or heat....I think they would be dead in the morning.

Freak'n chickens!

Hoppy went AWOL again this morning. After I let them out, we ate breakfast and I figured on getting her inside the house to feed her another egg & she was no where to be found.

2:00 I'm welding an axel for a friend and David (son) comes out front with a report of a Spitz with a hole in her neck.

Evidently Hoppy turned up and Meow has been picking on her again.

I guess this is Hoppy's new home.

She seems quite comfortable.

The Control Tower however is not amused...

Perhaps perching on a laundry sink, or one in a seldom used bathroom would be a bit more amenable? Or get Hoppy some chicken diapers? www.chickendiapers.com
