Arizona Chickens

yeah dido,
Do you know what kind of chickens you
guys want? Green, brown or white eggs?
Or all of the above? Babies or already laying?
A friend that owns a farm of all sorts suggested
to us to get all ready laying.. I wanted the girls
to grow up together and not fight.. Most of our friends
that have chickens tell us that it is harder
to bring them together when they are older..
Blood and all... No thanks.. However they also
tell us that they are loosing and getting chickens
every now and then..
Not sure, since we got little ones..
Keep us posted. :D
Ooopppsss
I meant to post to Odii... :p

Had the oddest talk with one of my neighbors down the street. She claims to be terrified of chickens because the feathers freak her out. That is a new one on me. Their feathers?

That's a first. But here is the conversation my 6 year old and hubby had last weekend:

6 yo: Dad, you should pick up a chicken.
Dad: I'll pass.
6 yo: Come on Dad, they're cool
Dad: No
6 yo: Dad, are you afraid of the chickens?
Dad: Their feet freak me out!

LOL - I guess his threats to eat my girls will fall short since touching their feet would be involved.

I just put my girls in the outside coop. They have shade, lots of water and I put in a frozen water bottle in there as well. I am worried though; they are panting and grouping together.... I was out there for awhile and I got overheated and came inside.

They are 4/5 weeks and they are too big for the brooder now. I hope I don't have dead chickens later today!

Freaked out, first time chicken mom here.

We do refrigerated watermelon as treats on hot afternoons...they really seem to enjoy that! I also have some washed grapes in the freezer that I toss out there too, although they're probably too big for my banties & seramas to do much with....next time I'll chop 'em a little, then freeze 'em.......spoiled chickens......

I am heading to Trader Joes in a bit so I will pick up some watermelon. I just put 3 more bottles of water in the freezer for later.

Anyone have chickens free ranging with access to an open irrigation ditch? I'm not sure If I need to worry about my girls getting in and not being able to get out. I'm also worried about them when it's full - will they try to drink from it and fall in? My babies are now 14 weeks old! I can't believe it's been that long already. They're also going great with the 3 older girls, they just get out of the way if they need to but they're ok all hanging out together!
Don't risk it! I lost my beloved silkie, Cerebro, and almost lost Mufasa to a shallow water pond (a kiddie pool used for the ducks). There wasn't much water in it, even! Chickens are the worst swimmers ever and drown way too easily. I would fence off the water canal and save yourself some heartache (when it has water in it of course.) Though, if you fence it off, you won't have to worry if there is water or not...it will give you peace of mind.

Found this in my chicken magazine:

Alektorophobia: Fear of chickens (from the Greek words alektor, meaning cock, and phobos, meaning fear), usually triggered by some unpleasant incident involving a chicken.People with alektorophobia have an irrational fear of chickens and their parts (including a feather or and egg). They break out in a sweat or experience panic at the sight or nearness of a chicken, fearing it might peck or attack them. In an extreme case, just seeing a chicken in a photograph or movie can cause panic.
