Arizona Chickens

Millie, my Black Sex-Link, passed away in my arms tonight about 8:10 pm. Poor baby.

She was fine Thursday morning running around and when I came home from work she was laying under their patio cover and wouldn't move. She looked dazed. I thought maybe she hit her head or was hot. She has been molting and I when I picked her up, she was very light weight. Gave her mealworms and she ate them up, fed her scrambled egg and electrolytes. She seemed to be on the mend but still listless and just wanted to sleep. Today while holding her, I was just checking her over and saw lice on her. Never saw any prior to today. I powdered her up and the lice came to the surface of her feathers. Gave her a bath to kill off what hadn't died. After I blow dried her I laid her in the sunlight in the house, more lice surfaced. I sprayed bird lice and mite spray on her and that seemed to take care of what surfaced. Also syringe fed her baby bird mash to help her get her strength. She just slept all afternoon in our old dog bed, waking every now and then. While I was cuddling her this evening, she passed away. She is up at the chicken rainbow bridge with her sisters.

When I get out of this hospital I'm going to go dust all of my chickens one more time.

I've got to find a way to get rid of all of the pigeons, doves and ravens that frequent my backyard run.

Sorry for your loss Chris. Breaks your heart.

I'm so sorry Chris for your loss! I also have a BSL that I adore, so sad!

Mahonri: Ack! I didn't know you were IN the hospital. I hope you get better and get out of there soon.

I have some eggciting news. As we all know, peeling hard boiled fresh eggs is a major pain. I've tried all the methods-adding salt to the water, poking a hole in the end, adding baking soda to the water, standing on one leg, boiling the eggs at midnight when the moon is dark. None of them have worked for me. So, when I read about hard boiling eggs in a pressure cooker, I was interested. http://www.hippressurecooking.com/2011/04/hip-modernist-soft-medium-and-hard.html I don't have an automatic pressure cooker, so I did it in my pressure cooker/canner at 7 psi for 6 minutes and used my freshest eggs. The oldest one was 2 weeks old, and even so the eggs came out perfect. A couple, the membrane stuck a little bit, but the egg still peeled really well.
