Arkansas folks speak up.........

Dawn - I hope your hatch turns out well. Any of the eggs from those babies we gave you? Are you using a DIY bator? We recently made one.

I have our first batch of eggs in the new DIY incubator. I used 2" styrofoam and bonded it to cabinet grade oak plywood. The inside is a 16 1/2" square of space. I made it look nice, it is a counter top/cabinet hybrid with a double pane plexiglass window on the door, which is the front of the unit. The thermostat (thermistor) and heater (resistors) are on a circuit board. On the inside I covered the styro with that shiny foil bubble wrap insulation stuff, then used HVAC duct tape to seal all around the corners and edges. Then I decided to make a little makeshift turner out of scrap stuff. The bator keeps the temp within .1 degree. Day 8 right now and out of the 18 eggs that are in there, 16 are showing good development - only 2 are questionable. No definite duds, but we will see in a couple more days. Cool thing is most of the stuff I had and recycled into this bator, I think we only had to spend $35. Out of that $25 was for the circuit board with the heater and thermo. It is working great!

I plan on making a better turner after this hatch that can hold more eggs. As is right now it is set up for 36 eggs max. I also plan to stain the outside to make it look more like furniture. I will get a couple of pics so you guys can see it.

How did the weather end up being for all you guys last night? I see lots of you made preparations. Here is was kind of a let down, big light show - not much wind or rain.

My six month old Pekins have been laying eggs and I decided to try my hand at incubating some. The eggs are/were scheduled to start hatching today however one egg hatched early on tuesday and one hatched on wednesday. They're so dang precious and already spoiled rotten to the core LOL
Here is duckling number one, named Scrappy:

Aww cute duckies! The rain passed last night without a problem. The chickens were dry this morning despite sleeping outside. I am going to lock them in the coop tonight and hopefully they will start using the darn thing. I did make some progress with them this morning: they both ate some leftovers form my hand

Everything is still dry in the run so I pulled the tarp back and let them have some sunshine. I am hoping our coop is big enough for two hens. And my fruitless efforts of gardening have FINALLY paied off! I have a squash! The chickens have already done a great job of eating all of the crickets and snails destroying my garden! This is going to be the best squash ever!

We got two inches of rain here.
Congrats on your squash! Our veggie gardens were a bit of a disaster this year, only got three squash plants but I was able to get quite a bit into the freezer. The deer ate all of my watermelon (200) plants however those rains we got about a month ago brought them back and I ended up with 30 melons. Our okra went nuts and we've been overrun with it. Our corn, peas and radishes were a big bust.

Here are those bator picks, you can't see the reading but that thermometer is calibrated and in the water weenie 99.5!

Our garden was alright this year. Corn and peas did nothing. Squash petered out early. Peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, okra, cucumber, and the rest did pretty good.

Thank you Scot :) I'm having a blast with them! My husband wasn't keen on the idea of my getting ducks, let alone hatching more but now he's asking me to get some Mallards for him ..he's hooked!

Well with this show being the first annual, Im not sure how the turn out will be. I am hoping that it will be good, so there is a second annual. Its a double show, so you will get two times the awards LOL. I hope to see some of you guys there.

Plum, those ducks are tooooo cute! Baby ducks always look like they're smiling.

We really didn't have any wind here to speak of...just rain.

Here's my two Cochins that hatched this morn. Does anyone know if these are Mottled or just black?
