Howdy 829 from the Ozarks!

What kind of chicks?

Here at my house:
I have an experiment going on btw. I am crossing my white crested blue polish rooster on my (meat) white cornish rock hens. Problem is he doesn't seem to be very amorous and I am not so sure he is getting the job done. I gave him a hair (feather) cut so he just has a little mohawk on his head now. I was worried he couldn't see the hens. That seemed to have opened up his world a little and he makes rooster sounds and actions just yet to see any reproductive type activity.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I bought Rhode Island Reds. I took the patagial tag out. I live in a HOA community, so I bought only hens and I hope to start getting some eggs next spring. They will free range in my backyard; I needed them to be quite. Through the winter, they will stay in my greenhouse.

Hi 829! Glad to see I am not the only person new to "chickens on the web" in Arkansas! I have had my barred rocks for almost a week now. Im love'n every minute of it (although one stubbornly insist on sitting outside in the rain. I was hoping they would go in by themselves tonight, but I had to lock them in again.) Silly chickens. Are these your first chickens or have you had chickens before?

Wow Dawn! I googled "pip" because I didn't know what it ment. Dose it usually take this long for a chick to hatch? How many do you think will hatch tonight? I know you aren't gonna get any sleep!!!

@Urban dreamer

This is my first foray into livestock. I just wanted to save on eggs. The benefit of insect eradication and kids' entertainment were bonuses.

I have been going out and checking on them regularly, they are in my "cold" greenhouse. I have a 100W bulb in a spotlight dome hanging over the top of them. Today has been cold, cloudy, and rainy and it still got up to 90 degrees in there. When it dropped to 80, I turned on the light.

I wish I knew how old they are, I bought them at Atwoods today and I forgot to ask. I am hoping they will start laying in March or April.

This is my first incubator hatch. I always let the hens do the work before. I have 3 out now. It's strange how they just pop out. All of a sudden where there was an egg with a small crack in it all of a sudden there is a wet chick. They are getting kind of loud now. Lots of movement going on in there and some of the eggs are rolling all over the place.

829, This is my first time too! I bought two 2-3 year old hens last week. I wanted older birds because I am not confinent yet to raise little ones. My hubby wanted RIRs but I like the color of the rocks. It has been cold and rainy all day. I checked on my birds this morning about 6 and then when I got out of class at 7. I have been checking on them 2 or 3 times a day. Its so strange and exciting! Im gonna have a heart attack when I find my first egg!!!

Dawn, I wish you had a camera so I could see what your seeing. It sounds like fun. Best of luck to your chicks! Im already thinking of building a bigger coop because it is a pain in the butt to climb into a 3 1/2 tall coop to put birds to sleep. Mabey I should have built something about 5'3?
