Arkansas folks speak up.........

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

I guess no one has bad luck all the time! I am usually the rooster hatching queen, but it seems that I have hatched two pullets from Amanda's (rbamterry) eggs. I had five Mottled Cochin Bantam eggs, three got broken under my Silkie, so I put the last two in the bator. Thought I had a pair for awhile, but now they both look like little girls. And they are the sweetest chicks. They like to sit on my arm and they don't mind being petted. I'm just excited and had to share.

My husband has opened the possibility of a getting a milk goat, but I would have to do the milking. So now I have to decide if I am willing to make that kind of commitment. I'm not sure if I am ready to tie myself down like that. Its hard enough to find someone to feed the chickens. We had goats once before, a looooooonnnnnnng time ago. I like the Nubians, and they are probably the best for the climate here in the delta. I am thinking one nanny and a wether to keep her company.

PS I just had a thought, goats don't multiply like chickens do they?

I've had milk goats up til 2 pits came in and killed most of them and totally wiped out my chickens and ducks. However, with that being said...if you don't have a buck for breeding then they won't multiply at all.

However, if a doe comes in heat and you have her bred then her 1st time she can have either a single or twins and normally they have twins or triplets after that.

Hope this helps....angel

Boy you've got that right, and this is on my mind all the time now. I've gotten really worried about selling my chickens to people who might not take good care of them. I wish there was some way to know for sure they're going to a good home. I sold some Silkies to a family with around 6 kids a while back, and a few months later a friend of mine purchased them from the family. My friend told me that she literally rescued them, and that the family had been keeping them in a small and filthy cage and had just lost interest in them. Knowing the reputation of the family, I'd have thought they'd have spoiled them rotten. At least they rehomed them, and they have a really good home now.

Well at least if you get a goat you won't have to worry about a lawn mower.

This afternoon I made my hubby "check on the chicks" for me while I am at work. He said that Gladys and Ginger were both in the coop. He said that when he opened it up that someone had pushed the dummy egg out of the nest box and that the bedding had been disturbed. Could that be a sign that Gladys is think about laying again? She has been molting for the last four weeks. Ginger follows Gladys everywhere and so I think she was "edumecating" my pullet.

I hope so. Zoii hasn't layed in two weeks and Eva has layed once in the two months I've had her. The only egg I got from her was the day before her accident. This was going to be the big weekend that I moved all four birds into one coop but I have to treat Zoii and Eva for worms now.

Its a real bummer. I might go a head and worm all four of them just to be on the safe side.

BTW: Lisa, Gladys has grown out most if not all of her feathers and is beautiful. She is much darker than the photo you posted. She is still skiddish of me but that is ok.

And that is my update. What has been going on in ya'll neck of the woods???

And, just for fun, here's Ethan with them when they were younger. Please excuse Ethan's silly face. Just look at the feather duster on that one chick!

So, do you think I'm right that they are both girls?

How long do you guys usually keep chickens for before you sell them or put them in the stew pot? My two BRs are over two years old and so I shouldn't really expect very many (if any) eggs from them from now on right? Its kind of a bummer really because thats one of the reasons I got them. I don't know if I can bring myself to cull and eat them. Mabey I should just wait until I can move out and build my chicken farm and have my two old gals as pets (which I will probally do anyways). What do you guys do?

ps: I REALLY want to move out and have my own house where I don't have to deal with my in-laws 24/7. Somebody please pray my hubby a job!
