Arkansas folks speak up.........

I just checked. It is now down to 10*F.

I put a waterer on a box I built around a heating pad and put that in the coop. It helped some, but not when it is this cold. I got one of those black rubber dishes from Tractor Supply. I can bang the ice out of it or stomp it out. Also, in the run in the sunlight, it actually stayed thawed yesterday but froze up as soon as the sun went down. Of course, they were in bed by then.

NOT loving this weather. It was 12 earlier, now it *might* be 30....lovely! My chicks that are in the barn brooders seem to be doing fine. If their rabbit waterers are more than 2" from the heat lamps, they are freezing up. I even had a regular chick waterer in one pen, about 12" from the heat lamp and and it FROZE...that's just COLD! The 1 1/2 to 3 week old babies are in screen fronted Shelves (basically) in a cabinet brooder. The heat lamps rest directly on the screen so they can get as close as they want. I wanted to see how they could do in cold weather, I just didn't think it would be quite THIS cold! I have three more hatches to go and then I am taking a break!

Chickens-not amused
Guineas-pissier than usual, if that's possible
Turkeys-chasing the poor dogs more than ever, as if it's their fault it's so cold
Horses-hyper and wanting their grain NOW, thankyouverymuch!
Cattle-eating their WEIGHT daily in hay, I swear!
House dogs-hibernation mode, "Who me go outside to pee? No, really, I'll be fine till later in the week when it's warmer"

You can see my heated dog bowl on the left - it's on a 1/4 pallet to keep the shavings out, and it's plugged into that lamp on the fence so that the plug is up off the damp ground. I LOOOOOOVE it! Was $20 at TSC last week and has already paid for itself in convenience.

You just sold one to me. It is so stinking cold I feel assaulted when I go outside. Today is not as bad as it has been. My girls are laying ALOT more than normal. I have been getting up to 13 eggs a day when 6 or 7 is the norm. I started making pound cakes and sending them to people because they take 8 eggs to make.

I'm having to sell all of my birds. I live in Camden. I have a vareity of birds. Mostly NHR. Will sell pairs and trios if available. Msg me or e-mail me if you're interested. I also have over 400 egg cartons.
