Arkansas folks speak up.........

We won two eBay auctions on the same day.

One is for my daughter: SQ White Silkies from jmingione

And the other for me: LF Buff Orpingtons from hinkjc

They were both shipped the same day. One from Indiana and the other from Pennsylvania. We had a contest/poll to see who would arrive first. PA won by a day.

Now we are having a 21 day (hopefully) poll/contest on which will hatch first. These will be set today in a Genesis incubator. Which eggs will hatch first, hinkjc Buff Orpingtons from Pennsylvania or jmingione White Silkies from Indiana?

Place your vote today. I will post what I find on candling days. At the end I will post how many of each we have hatch.

I voted for the Silkies. When you announce the winners, I'll tell you why.

I'm not familiar with the Silkies from that source, but from posts and pictures I've seen from Hinkjc, I think you will be real pleased with those Orpington. Good luck with the hatch.

Mornin Ya'll.

I know it's been a while since I visited this thread. Alot sure has changed. I'm needing some guidance from some fellow Arkansan poultry owners. Me and my new husban are looking to purchase some land. Anywhere in between Benton, Beebe, Hensley, that kinda region. If any of ya'll know of some land being sold (doesn't have to have a house on it but that would be nice) could you please PM me? We are looking for around 5-15 acres, cleared or wooded, that we could possibly hunt on until we can afford to build a house. And of course it would have to be somewhere where I can have my chickens and garden. Unfortunatly our price range only goes to 70,000 max.

Any help at all is welcomed. We're first time buyers som this is all new to us.

Thanks everybody!

Hi,

I am looking for someone in Arkansas....preferably in the northern half that might raise LF Cochins. I ended up with one that is around 27 weeks that is a rooster and am looking to find him two or three pullets or hens. I don't know where else to check and thought maybe some of you would know where I could find someone that raises them.

I have had to take him out of the main flock and I hate to leave him by himself. And I already have to pens and coops and am going to have to build a third for him and his girls.

Any help would be appreciated. Just PM me.

Thanks,
Beth

Urban,

They don't make these things as easy as I would like, but if you fight your way through this you can look at the listings in the area you are looking at. I'd like to see a few more sort features to eliminate a lot of the garbage in there, but this is the best statewide I could find. This probably does not show all the "for sale by owner" property. When we were looking in this area, one of the local agents had a very nice web site with a search feature that made it a lot easier.

You can try to handle it on your own, but I suggest getting an agent familiar with the area. They can find the properties in the area that suit what you are looking for a lot better than you can, but mainly since you are a first time buyer, they can handle the legal paperwork and advise you what all the different options are when making an offer. Surveys, inspections, title searches, counter-offers, all that stuff. Buying property is a big expensive deal and there are a lot of risks involved from the legal side. Unless you are real familiar with the process, I think having an agent to look out for your interests is worth the cost.

Good luck!

Thanks Ridgerunner!

We did meet with a realestate agent last Saturday. He was an old country boy himself and we sat and talked a good bit about what we are looking for. He's supposed to get back with me today but I'm not going to rely on him entirely (I would like to check out your links too!

). I've been callen folks, looking at different places, looking at the topography of the area (is it flood prone, ect. ). I am welcoming any help. I'm really looking forward to it!

Thanks again!

No one is very chatty here of late. We had a scare last night. When I went to put the free range flock up, they were all missing. I started finding them one by one, some with tail feathers pulled out. My rooster had a drooping wing and seemed very shook up. His favorite hen was still missing when I shut the coop. We looked with flashlights for awhile with no luck. My son and I were both pretty sad about the little hen. The good news is that this morning when I went to feed, she came bouncing out of the woods! Ethan got to see her before he got on the bus, so we were all smiles.

I guess it must have been a dog chasing them. I figure other predators would have killed at least one. I sure hope it doesn't come back today.

We are up just off the Arkansas River in Logan County. We always have a hawk or two. Yesterday it was like they were everywhere. I kept going out and looking around and checking on the chickens. We don't free range. We do let them out into the garden spot if we are out there. The runs are covered. If a hawk tried getting in he would get so tangled up he would never get out! But they still make my heart skip a beat when I see them.

So far we have not had any losses but I am aware it could happen at any time. My roosters, in separate pens, get pretty loud and the girls head for the coop if they sound the warning. So I think I am pretty lucky there!

We also have dogs on the mountain that we have concerns about as they killed our rat terrier last year and several other dogs of the neighbors. Right now we have a pug that the neighbors were missing last night that is just a pup that has not been found. I made my DH take a flashlight last night and go down in the woods and see what the hawk had yesterday and the buzzards were after. Was just an armadillo but it scared me when I got the call about the pup. But really, sometimes you need to keep a closer eye on your dogs...maybe a fence??? LOL.

Good luck Julie with your flock. It has to be scary!

To All:

There will be a meeting of the Ordinance Subcommittee at 5:30 pm on December 8, 2010. The meeting will be geared toward revising the city’s bird ordinances, specifically chickens and other poultry.

Anyone is welcome to attend, so if you have friends who are “chicken people”, please pass this along. We would love to get input from those who own and care for chickens.

Shot at a beagle today. It was in our yard, but outside of Buddy's area. Missed! Maybe next time. This same dog and his 2 friends have ran the neighborhood getting into trash and really wants my birds. Thankfully, Buddy and Sheba keeps the birds safe.

Note: They are also expecting puppies near Christmas. Will list the pups on BYC when they are available. Will be started in training to be poultry livestock guardian dogs.
