Dr. Bramwell isn't carrying those anymore. I was up there a few weeks ago and asked about the blue egg laying Brown Leghorn but was told by his assistant that he wasn't sure if it was being released yet. I think that is scheduled soon.

My only object that I have with my Arkansas Blues is they are very territorial and hard to introduce new flock members. At three years, I am still getting 5 eggs a week from one of my hens.

Thanks. I just purchased some eggs from her and I'm excited about getting them...probably not quite as excited as the broody hen that's sitting on nothing is going to be, but still.....

Congrats!!! She really has quite an operation. I went to her place and picked up a couple birds a year and a half or so back. I think you will be pleased. Let us know how the hatch goes.

Not to jinx myself, but the hatch should go very well because I'm not doing it.

You see, I have this little problem named Widget (serama hen). I bought Widget from a breeder many, many moons ago as a companion for my crossbeak silkie X named Dragon. The breeder I got Widget from said she was selling her because her colors weren't quite right. Aha, right. Widget's biggest "defect" is that she is never not broody, or at the very least thinking about being broody. She goes broody, hatches out her chicks and raises them for six weeks. At six weeks old, Widget kicks her chicks to the curb, starts laying again, gathers up six eggs and hatches them...all.year.round.

Every great once in awhile my husband will spot Widget out walking around and comment on how bow-legged she has become over the years. I have to remind him to think back to the last time he saw her out walking around. No fertile eggs? No problem! Wait out her broody for a couple of weeks and tuck some day olds under Widget - do it in broad daylight, it doesn't matter. Widget's face lights up and it's chicks! chicks! chicks!

Poor Dragon could never hatch chicks herself, so she'd take half of Widget's six and they'd co-raise them. Every single bantam on this farm was hatched and/or raised by Widget. She is my cross to bear.

Sounds like a blessing rather than a curse. I would love a reliable year-round hatching machine besides my incubator. If anyone out there has one, I'm willing to step up. I will give her the ideal broody/chick tractor 4 by 8 or 4 by 10 and let her raise chicks to her little hearts content.
