well someone new is laying! havent ever got one this speckled out of this group of birds. i've got alot of birds rreal close to laying age so there's no tellin who laid it

i suspect it might be this lady. i dont know what breed she is. somethin crossed i reckon, any ideas?

Every now and then we get one that looks similiar and it just seems to be that one of the girls laying parts have a temporary glitch. It usually doesn't last. I always just make sure they are getting their oyster shells and we bake the eggs shells, crumble them and feed them back to our birds. Seems to help with the shell production.

I'm in Batesville, I'm sure we got at least 10 inches here in the woods. Getting out there to the coop has been hell! I am in *** deep snow carrying water/food buckets! Then I got the cats and dog all around my legs wanting to see what I'm bringin them out. This is our first winter/snow with our birds, but all is doing just fine. They don't seem to even notice!! They are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo mad at me for not letting them out. But the snow should be going away in another day or two...never lost power-thank GOD!! Yeeesh that would have sucked!! I am starting to go a little crazy tho...nasty weather can go elsewhere-NOW

We had just over 8 inches.

(pictures taken from 2nd story of my house on Christmas morning)

My hens are not happy being cooped up all the time. Some of them don't even come out of the coop! It is a pain taking the buckets of food and water out in the deep snow. (Water hose is frozen) I have been cooking up some rice and mixing in vegetables so that they can have something warm to eat. They are not real big on the okra that I mix in it. I also need to buy me a pair of rubber boots of my own! I have been wearing my husbands and they are too big, which makes it harder. I have frozen water to change out every morning. My 2 lower pens are a complete soupy mess and nasty. It is made worse because the girls are locked up the last few days instead of being able to run around the yard and the wind blew off some of the side coverings. Going to reconstruct that pen to be sturdier, but you use what you have at the time. I need to figure out some way of keeping it dryer. With the way that the property slopes, I do not know if that is going to be possible. Looks like a long days work after all this is thawed out. These are my first chickens and their first snow. I am now rethinking my entire setup to make things easier and cleaner. To top it off, one of my banties is insisting on sitting some eggs! It has been pretty and I appreciate a white Christmas, but I am ready for it to be gone now. Good luck everyone.

Sorry for all your struggles everyone, but my best advise is have 2 sets of waterers for each pen and rotate out as many times a day as it takes and a scoop shovel to make paths to your pens helps to keep you dry while you do your chores, we got hit with 28inch's a while back and I learned fast and it was pretty easy with the double waterers we have a mud room that looks like a production area this time of year with the waterers setting thawing for 12 breeds , and a small heater in the barn helps with our 4+ brooders and juvenile pens.
Good Luck and welcome to winter Chicken wonderland

Has anyone seen these? Do you have one and like or dislike it. I am seriously considering the "Generac" Model. http://www.generac.com/Residential/GuardianSeries/45kW/

I would suggest you buy one that can be fixed localy. Every generac generator our company has purchased, it was hard to find anyone to work on it. I would suggest going to a local welding shop or a business that specializes in generators to buy one. Ask if they will work on it, at your home, if you buy it from them. I just thought i would save you a whole lot of trouble down the road.
