I would really like to get some barred rocks or a breed similar to them if I could. I'm not really wanting chicks though would prefer full grown hens.
Hello from Decatur! You may need to wait until the middle or the end of summer to get full grown birds unless you don't mind getting some that are over a year old. Most people are just starting to hatch out some chicks in their incubators. I would think barred rocks or any sort of barred chickens should be fairly easy to find. This is a great thread with many knowledgeable people. If you have any questions someone on here will be able to give you some great advice. Happy chicken hunting!

Most will not have pullets until early summer. Any you find at a flea market now would be "spent" layers. Those already completed at least one year of lay. If you are wanting a Barred type bird, why not the Barred Hollands? Its on the ALBC critical list and needs the extra help for preservation. It lays a white to a tinted egg. Though some lay a brown egg and breeders are attempting to only hatch from the whitest eggs.

We even have a Barred Hollands breeder here in Arkansas. Jenscott https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/10901/jenjscott down in southeast Arkansas. The thread for them is https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/468111/the-american-hollands-chicken-thread-census . Here is a comparison of Barred Hollands and Barred Rocks from Ideal Poultry Farm, who sales the Barred Hollands chicks. The photo is of Jen's flock of Barred Hollands last year.

The first print is a Barred Hollands. The second is a Barred Rock. Ideal's Barred Plymouth Rocks are not of show quality and will look similar to the breed, but not as large or as lovely as some you see on BYC.
