Arkansas folks speak up.........

Well, I finally got my hands on our hen "biggy" and I got her on the scale. She's a Buff Orpington and although she is hatchery stock, she is HUGE compared to my other B.O. hens! Hence the name! ;)

Anyway, she weighed in at 6# 13 oz! I told my hubby that she looks the closest to what a "real" B.O. is supposed to look like. That being large & meaty! LOL The other B.O. hens are almost 1/2 her size and have black in their tails. She has no black and is perty perty perty.

As a result of this weighing, etc. Hubby has agreed that we need to get a flock of "good" B.O.'s (i.e. not hatchery stock) so that we can breed our own! YaY!!!

Only trouble is, we can't do it right now! LOL With all the new additions to our current flock (20 chicks) and our foray into rabbit raising (16 rabbits) we're pretty much tapped money wise. We just built a rabbit hutch w/cages and totally re-worked the current run into two runs (one for the hens and one for the chicks).

With a flock of new hens & a rooster, we'd have to build a new hen house, a new run, etc etc etc. Well, it'll happen though since he's now in agreement with me! haha! I've wanted to do this from the beginning a year ago, lol!

Anyway, just thought I'd share!

You probably already know this but just making sure don't use biggy for breeding when you do get some good buff orps just because she looks better than the others she is still hatchery quality.
Not necessarily true. Remember what Dr. Bramwell said at the seminar? He started his White Silkies for hatchery stock and they are winning at shows.

Hello,

I am new to the chicken world and recently converted my carport into a medium size coop. I am looking for 4 laying (or close to laying) hens to purchase. If anyone has any leads that would be much appreciated. I am located in Little Rock, AR and happy to make a small drive if needed.

Thanks!
