Arkansas folks speak up.........

You “can” bring home a disease or maybe a parasite for your chickens if you go to chicken swaps or auctions, even if you don’t take a chicken home. A lot of things “can” happen. You can have a fender bender the next time you drive to the store. A piece of space junk can fall out of the sky and hit your home. The sun can shine today.

Some are more likely than others, some you have more control over than others. If you don’t wear the same clothes and shoes around your chickens that you wear to the auctions or swaps you greatly decrease your chances of bringing anything home. It’s unlikely you would bring anything home anyway but it’s really unlikely if you change your shoes. This is one you do have a lot of control over. It’s not one to be scared of.

Maybe I should keep some shoes to change into... I really want to go check out the benton auction. . I usually wear my old cover alls from my motor pool days and rubber boots around here... I free range, so that alone could bring bad results but it would break my heart to bring something home to my bavies..
Believe it or not, that's why I stopped pursuing a career in medical. Biology taught me we are losing the battle on bacteria. ..

All poultry has to be tested unless you are NPIP certified, or have a good 90 day certificate, a tester will be on site to test birds. Bring a tarp to place your critters on so it will help keep parking lot clean. We need to keep our critters healthy.

So been messing around with my brooding box... I want my chicks to have enough space to enjoy themselves... I put a white whatchamacallit ( not sure what it is) for them to play on it and learn how to roost... But do you think that takes to much of their room ? I'll have 15 of them and I know they grow fast... So I was thinking moving them out to the coop as early as 3 weeks old... Bc I'll get them as chicks on April 11th
What do you guys think?

Been trying to sell some duplicate hens. They are nice ( 24 weeks old on 3-3) NN hens. They should all start laying in about 2 to 3 weeks ( no guarantee). PM me if anyone is interested. I have six.

Here's mine with 3 ducks and 1 chick. We are at 4 weeks old and I have a feeling I'm going to be moving them out soon. Not sure how I'll keep the light in the baby coop but I'm going to have to think of something. They are growing fast! And I'll need to make room for 20 chicks that come in a couple of weeks. Plus new EHAL hatches.

That does not take up room or add room, it’s just part of their room. If you try putting 15 in there you will run out of room really quickly. I’d think of something bigger. One thing that can work really well is a cardboard appliance box, the box a refrigerator or stove comes in. Set that up in a garage or something like that. If you run out of room get another one and tape it to the first, just cutting a hole in them so they can use the whole area. They are going to grow really fast.

Do you have power in your coop? Here are chicks straight out of the incubator that I put in my brooder in the coop this past Monday.

And here’s a shot of the 3’ x 6’ brooder. This shot was taken in the summer. This time of year it’s wrapped really well in that plastic. One end stays pretty toasty but the far end sometimes has ice in it.

Who knows what kind of weather we will have around May 1, which is when I think you are talking about moving them outside. Last year we had snow May 1st. Many years three week old chicks would be fine outside without any extra heat. If you have power out there and can set up an area that stays warm no matter how cold it gets outside, there is no reason you could not put them in the coop Day 1, as soon as you get them.
