Arkansas folks speak up.........

I made mine using Ms. Prissy's Chic Chick bator plans. I used an Omaha Steak box, a water heater thermostat and a bottle lamp kit...some hardware cloth for the bottom. It's a still air. I never put a fan in it and this is my second hatch due next Wednesday. I think what has made this bator so successful is the fact that it's an Omaha Steak Cooler. That is one thick styrofoam cooler! I got 12 out of my first hatch of 18 eggs. This hatch has 11 eggies in it and everyone seems viable. It's been no problem keeping the humidity and temps good.

I've been informed that the randomness of the stored objects selected is not so random. When he said we could use part of an old DVR, I thought he was trying to entertain the chicks.( I rolled my eyes at him) I have since learned DVRs have fans in them that can be used to move the air around.

What kind of incubators do yall use?

We use Broody hens. I have an Australorp who can sit on about 18 eggs if you want her. She has already hatched and raised a group this year and she is going broody again! We are done hatching for the year, so her "talents" are not needed any further. Let me know if you are interested.

Using hens to hatch was the plan but you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find adult chickens for sale.

Hi Dawn! I am up here in Hector. There have been quite of few chicken ads in the Ark Dem Gazette. I'd start writing down phone numbers. Also, pm me and I'll give you the number of my chicken broker, Matt. He finds me goats, rabbits and has bought quite a few chickens off me. He might be able to find you what you want. Lisa

I went to Lonsdale Auction last weekend. There were a lot more adult roos than hens and the hens even mutt breeds were going for $12-$20 each. I ended up getting some chicks but no adults.

I keep an eye on both papers and craigslist. I don't mind driving some to buy chickens but over an hour has proven to be hard to find the time. I found some good deals on Craigslist but everytime I've been 2 late to get them. Now I check it every day. Did anyone read the article in Thursdays paper about urban chickens? Seems like the word is gettin around that this is alot of fun.

There are some BC Marans on Little Rock Craigslist right now....$20 for hens and $10 for roos. They are laying age. I got my flock of Cuckoo Marans off of Craigslist.

We had a recycle day here in Benton for old tv's and computers. I bugged those guys silly to gut the old pc's for the fans. I actually have 3 really nice ones that would be awesome in my bator, but I've done so well keeping it a still air that I haven't put one in. If I ever go to a fanned bator, I have one especially neat fan that I want to use. It's a little tiny double fan and won't take any room at all up in the bator.
