What a tragic week you've had! I'm so sorry for the loss to your familly. I know all about the MRSA as well. My step-son had it in his wrist where an infection had grown and we kept him in our air-conditioned shop for almost 3 months! Home health nurses came out twice a day to administer antibiotics in a shunt that he had placed at the hospital. That's some nasty stuff and I ran around my house with Lysol holstered like pistols. I can't imagine having it in the mouth!!! I'm sending blessings to your mom and I hope she heals speedy.

Jackiedon, MRSA!How could she get it in her mouth? Does she already have a lowered immune system? How did he drown?
So sorry for your loss. You have really had your hands full!

Tulip, There have been a lot in the Ark/Dem classifieds, don't know if you'd want a whether but they are practically giving away the bucklings.

Chickytocks- MRSA-Does he come in contact with lots of people? Any idea how he could have contracted it?

Jackie - prayers coming your way for you and your family

Oh boy, playing with these recipes I'll look like the mad scientist at work!

beakers, test tubes, centrifuge, titration mixer, petri dishes, bunsen burner, flasks, white lab coat - now we can all finally understand what you are all about

He had a previously broken wrist that required pins. He broke it again and like a dumb man who hates to go to the doctor, he ignored it until a big huge boil came up on his wrist. Finally he goes to the doctor and they lanced and tested the yuck stuff and found it to be "the baaaad staph". He was hospitalized for about a week and was told that he would have to get the shunt and home health. His awful, ugly, mean old mother told him that she didn't want him at her house because of the MRSA. We put him in our shop (which is actually my DH's manhole). It has fridge, heat, air, pool table, microwave, bed...blabla...(doghouse

I can't say where he actually contacted it from. I have no idea, but it's not wise to ignore an obvious infection for so long. It's just NOT manly!

I am in medical insurance on the doctor's side of things, I work with the insurance companies on the doctors behalf (basically trying to get things paid). You would be very surprised at how common these staph infections are in bone that was exposed either by surgery or accident. In a nut shell the immune response in bone is lower than other areas of the body, so when it becomes infected the bacteria grows rapidly. It is also good to note that the rate of recovery is very high, if it is caught in time and treated with strong antibiotics. When you have a surgery (or small procedure even) or fracture where the bone is exposed and they give you that bottle of antibiotics and tell you to finish them all - that is the prevention. Also drinking alcohol (not saying anyone here does) while on those antibiotics is a bad idea as it basically makes them not work. We see more of it in folks who don't take all their medicine, or drink while taking it. Just a daily public service message.
