Urban dreamer.....I hope Zoii is ok, I had to tarp one side of the brooder house because of the windows also. Hopefully it will be ok in there. I gave everyone extra straw because it's suppose to get down to around 30's tonight. I brought home a friends marans 2 month old roosters to take to the auction tomorrow.

Tala...chicks are too cute !!! I'm taking mine to the auction tomorrow. They're two weeks old now. They are really doing well.

Yeah for Sunday....I finally get my main flock of chicks from Julie.. I've waited over 2 months for them. I'm so excited. She was nice enough to hatch them out for me. She's a really nice lady.

Dawn...I have my chicks in an ice cream freezer like you see at the checkout counter at gas stations. I work at a recycle center and someone brought it in so the guys gutted it for me and I brought it home. It works great for cleaning out (has a plug at the bottom), retains the heat from the lamp real well, and I can slide one of the top doors (glass and plastic) open to keep fresh air going in. Plus it has wheels. If anyone has a recycle center by them, that is the place to go to find all kinds of things. Plus if you ask them for what you're looking for they could call you if something comes in.

Sorry, motor mouth today....

That ice cream freezer sounds cool! I guess more like warm

We went to TSC this morning and used our $2 off coupon and got 6 bags or Layena and a couple each of the start and grow and flockraiser - It ended up being $9.99 a bag! Plus the dates on the bag show it was made Sep 28th, which is WAY fresher than what I was getting from the feed store. I talked to the manager and he said they have sold something like 2 pallets of Layena this week. He said the Purina feed has been the most successful product launch ever for TSC. Good to know it's easier to get now.
Here's the funny part, we took my wife's car (an SUV) and put the feed in the back. We stopped at Home Depot on the way back home. When we got back into the car it smelled so good, we looked at each other and smiled. It smelled like some fresh baked bread. It made us so hungry we stopped at the mall and got chick-fil-a chicken biscuits

We are having a good weekend so far even thought the weather is crappy. Last night we went and saw Robin Williams at Verizon (old Alltel arean). He was uber funny

Im going to the fair tomorrow before I visit my folks. Chickens are fast man! Zoii got out while we were taking care of Eva. Everytime we go out now she trys to escape! Zoii is acting a little odd this morning. She gose in the coop, lays down, and them comes back out again. She did this four times this morning. Eva is justing sitting in back, not really doing much. I guess she may be cold.

I am starting my second attempt at cinnamon rolls. I made some yesterday morning and wasn't happy with them.we put on a pot of beans and my mother is going to come over later and show me how they used to do Sunday dinner when she was a girl. I have a feeling it ia going to involve a hatched and a couple of my chickens. Biscuits sound like a good idea. I found a recipe on the back of the clabber girl tin and I think I will start to perfect me biscuit making skills.

I made a cake yesterday with the eggs my hens laid. I used a white cake mixed, dumped some real blueberries in it and covered it with homemade creamcheese icing. It was like a giant glazed blurberry muffin! Cooking is some much more rewarding when you have to put effort into it. Yum.

How do I make sure Eva is getting enough water? She dosen't seem to be drinking alot.

Nikki - ours get way less active and puff up their feathers when it's cold, I think it is normal.

Dawn - Did you do overnight cinnamon rolls? There is a good recipe from Alton Brown on www.foodtv.com
That fresh chicken dinner sounds like it will be yummy

Once you get your biscuits perfected you can start doing other suff with the base recipe. Stephie finally perfected her biscuit recipe about 2 years ago, now she uses it as a base recipe for all kinds of other stuff. The dumplings she is making tonight are made from a modified version of the biscuits that she rolls thinner and puts fresh chopped herbs in... mmm yum. She also makes scones with the same recipe just by adding fruit I think (I would ask her but she is out right now). She sweetens it a little bit and tops grunts (a kind of cobbler) with it before going in the oven. Pretty versatile stuff that biscuit dough is.

Since she is not here, and you are cool, I guess she won't mind if I share her recipe with you. I really hope she does not mind (I just won't tell her)

She tinkered with this for a couple of years to get it just right. I think they are awesome. I will copy it exactly as she wrote it in her recipe book.

2 cups white lily flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
2 tbs butter
2 tbs crisco
1 cup bulgarian buttermilk
1 tbs sugar
1 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 450

Sift flour, baking powder & soda, salt and sugar into a mixing bowl. Use your fingers to massage the crisco and butter into the flour mixture until it looks like bread crumbs. Massage it fast so it does not melt the butter or crisco. Pour in buttermilk and stir just until it all comes together. Put the dough ball on a floured counter and dust with flour. Gently fold it over on itself 6 times. Form into one square mass about 1" think and put onto a baking sheet with parchment paper on the bottom. Once it is on the cookie sheet cut into squares with a pastry cutter (press straight down and pull straight up). Make the square biscuits as big or small as you want. Leave the biscuits touching each other and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes until the tops are golden brown. Take them out of the oven rub the tops with a little butter before breaking them apart.

Enjoy

Since it's a little cold today she will probably drink less. You can also give her some high water veggies like tomatoes or cucumbers just to make sure she gets enough if you are worried.

We went to the fair last night. They had a farm area for kids where they had chicks hatching. One of the chicks had hatched completely naked! They had some Turkens in the mix, so I assume it was a Turken with too many naked genes. Poor, ugly thing. It had dark skin like a Silkie. Didn't look like it was going to live either. That may be for the best.

They had many cute, healthy chicks, too. I thought about sticking a couple in my pocket and seeing if I could sneak out.

Just kidding!
