Arkansas folks speak up.........

Welcome Dawn. My father was an associate pastor near Evening Shade for over a year in 1979-80. You have to go down Good Earth Pottery Road and meat Rodney. Just be careful or he may "throw" a pot at you. Where bouts near Evening Shade are you? We lived about a mile north and over the hill on the Strawberry River. We turned right at the underbground house to get to our place. Lots has changed there since my teenage years, but it is still a lovely place to live.

What breeds do you have? How many?

If you want to "clear" the rest, try Icelandic Sheep. Twenty Icelandic Sheep would clear your woods in about two years and keep it clear....at least to about 4' from the ground. Goats do a fair job, but the Icelandic will eat everything.

Thanks for the Welocmes jenjscott and JimsFarmStand!

JFS,

We are just north of Good Earth Pottery Road. They usually have an Open House in late November and we plan on getting to it this year. Was going to go last year but I was sick as a dog.

We're absolutely loving the area and don't mind being just off the highway, traffic isn't that bad and I just tune it out anyways.

We don't plan on doing a whole lot of clearing, mainly just a few acres for pasture one of these days. We're taking our time and getting a feel for our land in all seasons so that we don't regret anything we do in the long run.

As for the birds, we have 5 Silver Spangled Hamburgs (1 roo, 4 hens), 9 Easter Eggers (1 roo, 8 hens) and 7 Guineas. Our chickens are all bantams but we're talking about expanding and getting into large heritage breeds and torn between Barred Rocks, Orpingtons and Black Australops as we've been told that they'll all do good in this area. We are also discussing ducks and thinking about Indian Runners.

Eventually, we'd like to get some heritage breed pigs to help with clearing the pasture and a team of mules for doing farm work...we'll get there, eventually!

JFS,

Your birds are gorgeous!!!

20+ years ago, when I first got chickens, they were a mixed flock of large breeds. When I decided to get back into keeping them, I opted for bantams mostly because I'd be taller than them (

) and secondly because the place we rented was just over an acre.

I will definately give you a holler when we're ready to expand our menagerie. Thank you!

Oh, I just love those pictures of your chickens. They, and the children are beautiful. I had no idea any chicken got to be so large!!! I like it!

All of our Heritage Exhibition chickens, ducks and turkeys will be exhibited at the Drew County Fair, the Pine Bluff Regional Fair and the Arkansas State Fair in Little rock. We are also hoping to exhibit at the 2011 Crossroads APA-ABA Joint National in Indianapolis. You are welcome to come to either fair and see them in person.
