Arkansas folks speak up.........

Welcome! I live quite nearby, and come to North Little Rock most weekends for the Certified local farmer's market downtown. I have a friend who lives well within city limits, and has chickens right next door to her. Plus, her mother keeps chickens and lives nearby. I have no idea if they're LEGAL or not, but I'll poke around and see what I can find out, if you're not having any luck getting answers.

Again, welcome!

Gritsar, I agree and I really would like to get the permit. According to the city code it is only $1.00 per year. I have no problem paying that

It says it is payable to the city clerk's office, but when I asked them I got looked at like I was crazy and told that they had no idea about it. According to the city code it was put into effect in 1980, so maybe they have not been enforcing it for a long time. It says that the health dept is the one who has jurisdiction over "fowl kept in the city", but that the city clerk deals with the paperwork and issues the permit. Seems like a normal case of one dept not communicating with the other for almost 30 years. IMO it is more of a headache and a waste of time for the city to keep up with these permits for only $1.00.

Ninjapoodles - any info you find out would be great! Do you go to the farmer's market to shop or to sell? If you are selling something we will be sure to look for you!

Thanks

I emailed the head city clerk today from a covert email address (just in case) and asked what is the process to get a permit, I also copied that section of the code and attached it to the email. Maybe I will get somewhere, if not at least I have what she says in writing in case a future issue come up

Jarhead-

One idea would be to get on a first name basis with your local Animal Control Officers. They are supposed to be your "local experts" as far as animals inside city limits, and should know about the permits. Also, if anyone is going to complain, it will be Animal Control that they will call.

When I had problems with a neighbor regarding my animals, I called them, asked them to come out, introduced them to my "dangerous animals" and let them see for themselves. Saved me ALOT of headaches, and possibly a court appearance because the ACO's were already familiar with the situation, and were better able to assess the validity of the neighbor's complaint. I also ended up as a "foster mom" for a few of the puppies that they had come in to the pound, that were just tooo cute / young to be put down without at least being given a chance for finding a home. I considered it a good trade-off: their good will and friendship for my animals while having to live inside their rules about "dangerous dogs". (I had a Boxer/Lab mix and later a German Shepherd)

Your best bet for current info on HOW to get the permit would be to call your County Extension Office (usually in the County Government complex), talk to their "chicken person", and see what They know about it. It's their JOB to stay up on all local legislation regarding farm animals, so let THEM do whatever is required to pester the City into issuing your permit.

Semper Fi!

Semper Fi! Kathy,
Great idea on the Animal Control. I am already on a first name basis with one of them, I happened to be outside one day and he was looking at a property behind us that was for sale. I walked around with him and showed him the outside of the property and gave him the low down on the area. Of course the property in question had a pending sale, which went through, so he didn't get to buy it. Thanks for the tip.

That sure looks like Whitaker point, about a mile off of Cave Mountain Cemetary road.

Its far more enjoyable from the bottom up, except for the surprising amount of trash that people toss off of the crag.
