I would use a cattle panel in the bottom of my coop and that will keep the dog's out
I feed layer pellets and allow my birds to free range the yard a couple times a week
If you want the most freindly chicken and a joy to own I would get Cochins if you want heavy producers I would look into barred rocks or new hamps both very friendly
I sale chicks and eggs and will probably have some nice pullets come spring your welcome to come for a visit and we can show you how we raise birds here

Sorry I haven't been in town to reply! I would love to come out and see what you have!! I have been buying my eggs at the Farmer's Market, but they will be closing for the season here shortly. Will you have eggs during the winter? Thank you for your ideas, they are very helpfull!!

I'm looking for silkie hens/pullets. Don't have to be show quality...just think they are so cute! I would prefer to not drive a long distance...in or around Batesville~around 30-45 miles out?? Thanks!!!

Thanks for the Information I have been doing research I was looking to find people who have them and could give me information from personal experience with the breeds.
I've had Orpingtons and they are lovely, though I would watch where I purchased them because mine came from a slightly less than reputable breeder and they were flighty. Never heard of a flighty Orpington before that. They also waited til they were 8 months to lay so be prepared for a long wait

I know!! I never thought it would be difficult. I'm thinking about
going to beebe to the poultry auctions....
The one at Beebe is a swap or people saleing their own chickens.
There is a auction at Lonoke the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month.
Dec. 8th will be the only one in december though, they are closing up for the holidays after that one. They should resume for the 2nd and the 4th Saturday's in JAnuary 2013.
