DS (pre-teen) is in the local Young Marines unit (he's carrying the American Flag, so he's hard to see). The unit marches in a lot of area parades, multiple Memorial Days events, Flag Day ceremonies, and coming up soon, Veteran's Day activities. Watching several dozen young men and women (teen and pre-teen) painstakingly mark veterans graves with American Flags on a bright Spring morning is something to stir your heart. It's only surpassed by watching them repectfully serve punch and cookies to veterans (male and female) as they sit with them listening to tales of honor, courage, and valor of days gone by. Last year, DS spent 10 enthralling minutes listening to a WWII fighter pilot describe his emotions during his first combat mission exchanging live fire with the enemy. For the next month, any family member DS ran into, he recounted the story in detail.
Between my family and DW's family (thankfully all made it home from their service, no one currently active or in reserves):
Army - WWII Anzio
Army - WWII Normandy Bocage Fighting
Air Force/Air Nat'l Guard
US Marines
US Navy (x2)
May God Bless and Keep Safe everyone's loved ones in the military and the family that waits patiently at home.
